Help me cook!

Hi,
I happen to work in the IT industry and am headed to the States on a short-term assignment.

I have one problem. I do not know how to cook.

This is not strange as here in India domestic help is cheap and women do most of the cooking.

This might be a strange thread but I am here to seek help.

What sort of stuff is easy to make and ready to eat and can be handled by dummies like me?

Make friends with your new work mates and get them to show you where to get cheap eats. And maybe some of them will teach you how to cook.

I know it's a cultural thing, but knowing how to cook is a useful skill, male or female, rich or poor.

Buy some pre-made canned soup. Pour into a ceramic bowl. Cover with saucer. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between heatings, until warm.

If you want some of your own food:

- get a bag of lentils (or 'mixed dahl')

- put in a pan, add water until water comes 2/3 times higher then the lentils

- add garlic, onion, lots of cumin (ghira)

- a fresh peper (optional)

- salt as you like

- cook this voor 45-60 minutes

- taste and decide if it needs longer cooking and/or more salt, for your taste

Cook some rice as stated on the package you buy

Guess what, you have dahl.

If you want your dahl a bit better, fry some onions with ghira/cumin seeds and. If your wife/mother uses ghee and you like that, butter is closer then vegetable oil for frying.

Add this fried mixture in the end after cooking the lentils/dahl.

If you'd dare a curry someday, fresh coriander is your best friend

Anything in the freezer section

Sandwiches of any variety

Chicken in rice (with chicken/mushroom broth, rice, and chicken breast. Oh so easy, oh so yummy)
