Please recommend Amp for HD600 and DT 880 (less than USD800)

Hi all Head Fier,

I've been away from the headphone hobby for a few years and now want to re-join this hobby. In my collection I have a old HD600 (the foam covering the driver has deteriorated and need replacement) and the first generation DT880. I have no headphone amp on hand and want to source the best headphone amp possible with a budget below USD800 no matter it is a completed commercial unit or a DIY kit. I am a DIYer.

I am in Hong Kong and can buy most of the Little Dot models and Dark Vice models easily. The following are under my consideration list and other recommendations are welcome:

- Meier Audio Concerto

- Little Dot MKIV

- Little Dot MK7 (with balanced connection so that I may upgrade the HD600 to balanced connection later)

- One of the Dark Voice Model?

- DIY M3, B22 (Active ground version, full balanced version exceeded my budget)...other DIY project.

I want to get the Best sound quality possible. Preferrable, this amp should be very capable even if I upgrade to HD800 or T1 later.

Thank you for your input and advices.

Andy

what about an amp that costs 799? the HeadRoom Desktop Amp/DAC is 799.

At this price range, if you don't already have a DAC, I would definitely recommend getting a DAC as well, or a combo unit as jasonb recommended.

I already have a Benchmark Pre DAC and thus only require a pure headphone amp. My source at this moment is Consonance Ref. 2.2 CDP as CD transport . Will add to my system a mini Mac as music server. That was why I bought the the Benchmark for USB connection as well.

By the way, is a DIY B22 (3 board active ground configuration ) much better than the mid-price amps.

Thanks

Could add the Burson Audio HA160 to your list.

I have the version with the built in DAC and it sounds excellent with my hd600s.

I strongly recommend to go the harder way, which is the b22. You can squeeze a 2-ch build in your budget.

Thanks all for the advices. I am eyeing at the Concerto and may build the B22 balanced version in a later stage.
