We had a Hyundai LCD monitor that was slowly developing a yellow tinge in one of its corners. One day, curious, I opened the monitor to find that the base of one of the CCFL bulbs was charred and had melted part of the LCD. I'm glad it didn't burn the house down.

i just much prefer the light given off by 6500k (kelvin btw) i always found incandescents to be so horribly yellowy orange

Have you ever tried using a GE Reveal?  They give off natural light that has the full spectrum of sunlight (minus the harmful rays).

actually i couldnt tell you who make the ones i use but it wont have been GE as i dont recall seeing their branding.

however the GE ones dont seem to go up to as high a wattage as i want.  i use 30w (150w equivalent) ones all over

I was starting to think I was imagining it (I'm pregnant and prone to smelling things that aren't really there!). Finally, I saw a few wisps of smoke in front of the window, when the sun was shining really brightly. I freaked out and called my husband (he just works a few minutes away) and got the kids out of the house.

Lovely !  so you were breathing mercury vapors and are pregnant.

I think a friendly letter to GE  mad.gifalong with a threat to go to court might get you a few dozen cases of incandescent bulbs.

I'm telling you, 20 years from now this will have been as bad as our little asbestos experiment!

There's no evidence that the bulb was broken or its internal gases released.

And going to court over a burnt bulb? Really?

I guess I'll be buying a few cartons of incandescents before 2012.

Well, the kicker is that we were going to call GE but didn't get around to it this week, and in the meantime the bulb was sitting on top of the microwave. And while I was rummaging around up there looking for a pen last night, I knocked the bulb off and broke it :P  (Luckily, my husband was home, so the kids and I went in the other room for awhile and he cleaned it up.)

But yeah, I am NOT a fan of these types of bulbs anymore. Incandescents may cost more and get hotter, but if you break one, you don't have to evacuate the room, and I've never in my 34 years known one to start smoking. (We did some reading online and even found reports of flames shooting out of them!) I am just grateful that this happened when we were home, and awake.

And no, no lawsuit planned, unless the baby is born with a "GE" emblazoned on its second head or something :)
