Recommended amps for ATH-m50s (and probable future upgrades)?

Howdy, I recently got my first real pair of headphones (m50s) for Christmas, and while they're a welcomed changed for my previous IEMs, I've been worried about an untapped potential I'm not hearing. While I understand some are weary on (possibly expensive) amping ATH-m50s, I do intend to buy more, or at least an open headphone in the future.

In fact, I've been debating on whether to return the m50s for Denon d2000/d5000. Also contemplating k701 in the future.

I spend about 3/4 listening at home and 1/4 on the go with an ipod classic, so thats where the option of portability comes from.

I have an HT Omega Claro+ soundcard (DAC is AK4396VF, clueless if that's good or not, but after trying the on-board sound and the card, I couldn't recognize much of a difference besides that the card's driver was better.)

I want to make sure I'm getting an accurate representation on my current m50s sound though before I decide to find other headphones. (I wish I could describe what I prefer/what I'm hearing but I'm turrible with sound lingo :[ )

In short, can anyone recommend an amp to get started on, considering the possibility of future purchases? Or a DAC/amp if my current DAC isn't up to snuff. Budget is $400 MAX but I'm hoping to spend less.

How does the Headstage Arrow fare with Denon & AKG?

I'm currently using a PA2V2 with my m50's, matches very well in my opinion and the price is right.

I have the E7 with the M50 and I don't think the M50 benefit much from the E7 to spend the extra cash flow.  I find my xb700 and d2000 benefited much more.  Who knows it might just be the E7.

I think the m50 sounds good as it is, but then again I don't have much experience with amps beside the E7.  Take this as is, as I am only measuring my thoughts with use of the E7 and the headphones I have.

I want some M50's. I have the A700's right now and I enjoy them but don't know how the two compare. My two cents, most of what I have read about the M50's has said that they don't really require amplification. It may make a slight difference at very high or very low volumes, but for average ears, (though not saying yours are average) I don't believe an amp will have very much effect.

The M50s don't need a dedicated headphone amp -- they're extremely efficient. That said, I like them best paired with my Little Dot tube amp. Tubes introduce some pleasant warmth/distortion to what are otherwise very revealing headphones (they're studio monitors, after all). There are plenty of tube amps for under $400, especially if you buy used.
