DAC power supply

I'm really new to DAC stuff and wonder:

Connecting the headphone amp/DAC to the computer - should I prefer power to the DAC via the USB or separate 18V/230V adapter?

If both are connected - which will power the DAC?

If you could, I run it from a separate power supply to unburden the USB connection from having to carry the power.

Thanks for the reply!

Will USB power supply be disconnected in some way then when external is connected to have that benefit ...?

Yes, assuming that's how your DAC works. If so, your cable will be less important as it's not carrying the power. You could then use a cheapie or modest USB cable and not worry about it affecting the SQ so much.
