Perfect description. It just didn't sound real. My only real comparisons up to this point were a pair of  Sennheiser HD580's and some TF10's. The T40's sounded like pack in iPod buds. :p

Those look sweet! Especially for the price.

So after another day and getting a chance to watch a dialog heavy movie I'm very happy w/ the AV40s. @ $110, I'm not sure where to go next. The A5/M200/M50's all triple that number. Are they even twice as good? Any other options? I do really despise the power switch in the rear, haha. Why would they do that?

The samson media one 5A or edifier rt1900 or rt2000 .

Or what about a passive set-up?, the a5's aren't that much better than the av40's and in some ways the av40's are better.

T40's sounded like pack in ipod buds? Man do people know how to exaggerate.

I bought a used A2 from someone off head-fi and I loved the quality and looks. The bass was a little weird and the speakers sounded better at a higher volume. They also sounded thick and warm, which would be a plus or minus depending on the person.

I ended up selling the A2 and bought a T40 off a special order from amazon for $80 new(normally sell for $120). I just plugged them in and right off the bat I can tell that they're flatter, but have a wider frequency response like someone else said. They also sound great at low volume like they do high, unlike the A2. I felt the A2 didn't have enough bass and with the T40 I feel it has enough. I was also surprised at how tall+deep the T40s were.

There are compromises depending on which one you choose, but I would pick the T40 every time because of the price and the fact that I wouldn't feel the need for a sub like I did with the A2.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that I loved the fact that because of the design of the T40s, you didn't need a stand. The A2s needed a stand to direct the sound towards your ears to help sound stage. I spent 5 bucks and made stands out of door stops for the A2 instead of spending 30 bucks for the overpriced stands.

Haha, well, obviously, they're better than that. I just meant they both sound muddy to my ears. After listening to the T40's for a day I just couldn't stand them anymore. Packed em up and swapped for the AV40's. They sound better in every way for $10 less. Unfortunately, they're footprint trounces the T40's. They also lack a convenient on/off switch on the front. IMO, it's worth the hassle for the MASSIVE quality jump.

Nice touch on the door stops! I'm using some rolls of plumber tape right now, but I like you're idea much better!

I got some open box av30s half a year ago. I returned it because I didn't like how it sounded at all. AV40 gets plenty of praise but because of the av30, I've never considered taking a chance on the AV40.

^probably a good choice. The 40's aren't quite the ticket to awesome I had been hoping for.

I'd kill for something that sounded great w/ controls on front, a chill led (maybe even w/ the ability to turn it off/flip a cover over it), front ports, small profile, and height/angle adjusting stands. It should do laundry too.
