Koss UR-29/Pro 3AA Ques

Just a quick question about the foam (not sure what I should call it) that covers where the sound comes from in my headphones. I have the Koss Ur-29s and the Pro 3AAs are supposed to be better. Looking at the Pro 3AA picture here, you can see that there is no foam covering where the sound comes from. With the UR-29 there is foam. The question is, would removing the foam from my UR-29s cause any kind of increase in sound quality? Does Koss use the foam as a way to reduce sound quality, in its lower priced headphones?

Btw I know cutting a hole in the foam wouldn't make the UR-29 as good as the Pro 3AA, but would taking it out make it sound any better? Heres a pic of the UR-29.
