your opinions on these two speakers...

Hey guys,

Guitar center had/has the BX5a's for 199.99 and I needed some new speakers for my computer setup. I am using them with my presonus firepod interface right now. They do sound pretty good, but not as good as I thought. They seem not to be THAT great with heavier music (heavier rock) and seem a little sterile. Is this just because they are new? Do they get a lot better as they break in?

I also have a few tube amps I could try with some passive speakers. I was using them with some bookshelf version infinity rs10's but was expecting the bx5a's to be a lot better.

I also found audioengine ap4's for about the same price I got the bx5a's for (220 with tax). How would you compare these two speakers? I could always take these bx5a's for the ap4's. I kind of want a little warmer sound.

Or if there are other speakers in this price range I am all ears!

Thank you!

P4 is a little more than warmer, it's noticeably warmer than the BX5a. I don't really like this warmness in the bass and midrange region. I personally cannot settle for anything less than the BX5a's amazing tweeters. I don't find speakers or headphones change much, if you don't like how it sounds now then don't hope for it to change later. It could be you need to listen to them longer for your ears/brain to become accustomed to the sound. I have my BX5a paired up with a subwoofer. I prefer the BX5a sound a lot more than P4/A5. If you have heard of the sennheiser HD555 or HD650 headphones, the P4/A5 sound similar to that while the BX5a sound more like AKG K701.

Not to throw a wrench into the equation....but I was wondering how Paradigm Atoms might compare to the the P4's.  I'm interested in the Atoms because I just got a Nuforce Icon2 for Christmas and need some small efficient monitors to pair them with.  I listen to mostly Classical and Jazz with a little rock every once in a while.  Thanks!

The Atoms are a great little speaker; highly recommended! You can sometimes pick them up for a song.

A friend of mine picked up a pair at a garage sale for $15 bucks! One of the speakers had a broken woofer connection (inside), but a lil' solder session later, and all was fine.
