I do not own a PS3 and have no idea how to do it software wise, but if you can't figure it out you could probably use this cable <http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102969> and hook it up to both the PS3 and your music souce.

That won't do anything. . .
Only certain games allow this I think. It has to be done in game.
I don't think you understand. That cable mixes two stereo sources down to one. If you plug one end into the PS3 sound and one into say an iPod you'd hear both through the headphones.
This would be the DIY way to get music while playing your PS3, especially if some games don't actually allow it, because you're circumventing the PS3 altogether.
My bad, I'm confused.
My PS3 does not have RCA out, the way my family does it is it goes to the TV via HDMI and the TV has RCA outputs which we connect to a speaker amplifier. . .
It's two male 1/8 plugs that mix to a single female 1/8 plug. What you would do is plug one end into your stereo receiver just as you would normally with your headphones, and plug the other into an ipod or other music source. You'd then plug the headphones into the Y cable and you'd be able to hear both the music and the PS3.
The only thing that's being assumed is that OP is using headphones plugged into a 1/8" headphone jack. Most TVs and receivers have one. If OP is using speakers, then it will not work. In that case, disregard this advice entirely, and I apologise in advance for clogging up the thread. But w/ headphones this should work.
ok thats hell confusing for me. please tell me should i get that Cable or this will be of No use. :S
I found instructions at eHow. Here's the important part:
Read the manual that is included in your PlayStation 3 game's case to figure out if it supports the custom soundtrack feature. Read carefully as some games only support the feature in certain modes or after certain things have been accomplished in the game.
Activate the custom soundtrack feature by navigating through the game's options screens. This is where you will often find the ability to tweak sound and music related aspects of the game. If you do not see the option and are certain the game supports custom soundtracks then you may need to research further to discover what steps need to be taken to get custom soundtracks working on that particular game.
