Like cheesebert, I fail to see the point of this thread. Are you trying to goad yourself into buying something that is very expensive?
I make a lot of money, have no debt, and savings north of $5 million. I cannot justify a budget above $2K on audio equipment per year. And some years I spend nothing. I find that the improvement per dollar spent really levels off at that point, except for speakers. Unless David Mahler has a big trust fund, I cannot see why he spends that much cash on headphones and amps. For bragging rights? To have more "e-friends"?
A cautionary tale: during 2009 and 2010, tons of ads were posted on Audiogon to sell mega-buck audio components in which the seller said he needed the cash because he had lost his job, had no savings, and/or needed money to pay his mortgage or his rent. In some cases, advertised components cost more than $20K. I asked myself whether the seller was delusional when he bought the component in the first place.
Questions like the original poster's seem designed to enable "aspirational"/conspicuous consumption, nothing more. In this economy, people need to find other sources of meaning in life.
