Question about wiring a new plug on headphones.

I've just bought some K701's from Vitok33.

They current have a 4-pin Neutrik XLR plug on them - I want to change this back to a standard Jack.

I gone and purchased a 1/4 'Switchcraft' jack.

What's the best / proper way to convert these back - i.e. which wire goes where?

Thanks in advance.

Your simplest option is to use a cable like this:

You can pretty much get any length you like. If you find these expensive you can always search for some cheaper options online.

Balanced headphones sound better than Single Ended, so you might wanna keep it that way rather than recabling them to SE.

I believe "balanced" headphone cable's plugs give "better" connections - the 4 pin type pin/socket usually have multiple contacts and lower resistance vs the TRS cylinder/bent beam "single point" contact

and with a 4-pin "balanced" connector R/L return current isn't sharing the poor single point contact gnd contact of the TRS

there's no reason to not want the superior low contact resistance 4 pin connection if you have an amp you can use it with (not that anyone I know of is using 4-pin with a SE amp - I would if I built my own amp for a headphone that came with the 4-pin connector)

by all means the 1st choice should be to make an adapter cable and keep the miniXLR

I think the whole concept of "Real" dual-XLR balanced phones is that there's basically one amp for each channel.

The convention can be found here:

(Pin numbers should be labeled on the connector)

To connect this to TRS: 1 goes to tip, 3 goes to ring, 2 & 4 go to sleeve.

As others have noted, you may want to consider buy/making an adapter instead if you ever want to go balanced with these headphone.

Thanks everyone for the info.

I'll probably just swap the plug, I'll keep the XLR in case I do but this is unlikely.
