They are less forgiving of bad recordings as well. That said, the Lyr could drive the LCD-3s with lots of head room but I found the combination quite a bit less inspiring than with the LCD-2s.

I was enormously unpopular on the early Lyr thread as I felt the same thing about the Lyr with my rev.1, compared to listening to it balanced out of my WA22. Definitely more of a synergy issue than a power issue. I didn't like the HE-6 out of either amp and prefer it out of a modest SS speaker amp with a tube input stage.

The Lyr doesn't come close to running out of juice with the LCD-3, IMO... or with the HE-6, for that matter. It's definitely just a matter of synergy (and tube choice).

Good to know.

^ What he said. But I couldn't find a tube combination to work with my LCD-3s though.

Might be perfect with the Siemens & Halske CCa.  They provide a good boost in soundstage and dimensionality, but are a bit bass light.  Sounds like they'd complement the strengths and deficiencies of the LCD-3.

I didn't try the Siemens tubes, but I've typically found West German tubes cold and sterile through my travels.

What's the word on the EF-6?  Has anyone had a chance to spend some time listing to it with the HE-6?

My thoughts added to Iron_Dreamer's thread http://www.head-fi.org/t/593646/review-hifiman-he-6-ef-6-an-elite-headphone-system-under-one-roof/45#post_8119462

The Swedish HiFiMAN distributer will bring EF-6 to the High End Show in Stockholm this weekend!

I understand that if one uses the HE-6 out of a tube speaker amp, one should add a resistor (I have seen a non-inductive Mills 10 Ohms (12W) mentioned as a good choise) in parallel to decrease the impedance for the output of the amp.

Now the technical question:

How much output is the HE-6 getting, if the output of the tube amp is for instance 15W and there is a 10 Ohms resistor in parallel?

If one uses a different resistor - would the HE-6 then receive more/less power then?

Orthos typically have very flat impedance vs frequency curve - almost no sensitivity to amp Zout

http://www.headphone.com/headphones/hifiman-he-6.php (Specs tab)

15W into 50 Ohms is getting to be pretty good for 83 dB/mW headphones

unfortunately 15 W into 8 Ohms works out to ~ 3 W into 50 Ohms from low Zout amps like most audio power amps

if your tube amp output xfmr has a 16 Ohm tap that would give more V, better drive 50 Ohm headphones

loading for damping of the HE6 isn't important but  the tube amp output xfmr may like more loading for frequency response flatness

A question that maybe a bit off topic - However,  would this amp and speaker tap work with the HE-6?

Thanks..

Sorry I wasn't specific about the output of the tube amp. The amp has 15 Watts in 8 Ohms, and the amp hasn't got 16 Ohm output selection, only 4, 6 and 8 Ohms. If I use a 10 Ohm resistor in parallel on the speaker tabs, how much power will the headphones get?

That will indeed work.

Nice looking amp.  Yes it would work and at 60w you won't need the adapter.  Your problem with this amp would be the synergy.  I have tried 100w amps that sound terrible.  Unless you have heard it firsthand and know its characteristics I would not buy blind.  On the other hand, I think Emotiva has a trial period for their products.  The HE6 may seem like a picky headphone but it is actually very analytical towards source component.  If you do try this amp please give us a review.
