Sandisk Clip+ .... not quite certain about some things...

Alright, so I have acquired a pair of Ultrasone Pro 900s and I love them. I am aware the impendence is pretty low (40 ohms) and have been told that an amp is't really necessary and won't affect the SQ much. Essentially, I have learned (correct me if I am wrong) that these cans can be driven with a portable DAP with no problem. Currently, I am interested in the Sandisk Clip+ and I'd buy it but there are a few issues I have heard of.

Apparently, the Clip (the Clip+'s predecessor) had a slow playback and low pitch problem. I have read elsewhere that the Clip+ has a slightly fast playback issue along with a high and out-of-tune pitch. In my personal opinion playback should be perfect. Either that or Sandisk should release a firmware update to solve this problem.

I am wondering if these problems have been corrected on the Clip+ and if there are any other problems you guys are aware of. Also, would you say the Clip+ has good SQ? If you guys can offer any more suggestions as to other DAPs that'd be great. Keep in mind my financial situation is pretty tight.

Just because the Ultrasone Pro 900s are (40 ohms) it doesn't mean a Clip+ will be able to drive them.

You need a dedicated Headphone amp or at minimum a portable headphone amp.

*bump*

Anyone know anymore about the Clip+ playback issue?

Some said it was fixed awhile back.  Don't recall if there was proof or consensus on the matter.  Plus I wouldn't hold my breath on your CLip+ driving the 900 well.  Good luck.

I didn't notice anything when I had the clip+ with playback or pitch.

However getting an amp would probably be wise or a more powerful player. The headphones have a sensitivity of 96 dB and with the weak clip+ output I'd be quite surprised if it was driven well.

Hmm... looks like I will be stuck plugging my cans into my laptop on the Go Train to Toronto for the next while hahahaa. I am just about to order this computer http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/asus-asus-13-3-intel-i5-430m-u30jc-qhda1-cbil-silver-u30jc-qhda1-cbil/10157074.aspx?path=aef8a4dbd0d4df32038148ba9213623ben02 and am hoping it will drive my headphones somewhat half decently. What do you guys think? Will it sound like total crap?

I was redirected to another thread telling me that usually portable amps don't accomplish much

If you Rockbox the clip+ the issues you mention are non-issues, and it will be adequate to power the ultrasone's that you have. Rockbox removes the crappy OF limits Sandisk placed on their devices,...so get a clip+ and enjoy.

People are entitled to their opinion.  If you can't hear a difference it only makes sense to save your money.  Only one way for you to find out.  Crunch all the numbers you want and listen to all the advice only your ears will know the truth.  You can only operate on educated faith at this point.  If humans can stand to survive a death camp or slavery I'm sure they can tolerate a 900 out of a clip+.

At the Amazon price for the Clip+, I really don't know that its going to be a major blow if the player doesnt meet your expectations. Any cheaper and they would be handing them out at the supermarket for every purchase over fifty dollars.

$40 for 8gb is the target price you should aim for.  That is the rock bottom.

Anaxilus. have you posted any impressions of your experience with the QA350+DACPort combination ? I had an order in for the 350 but the dealer screwed me around and I got the money refunded - still wondering if I made the right choice (asynch USB DAC from my netbook).

I have a few impressions.  I just did a 602 DACPort blurb yesterday.  Any of the 601/602 threads should have it, I mass posted.  The DACPort is superior to the 350 by a good margin.  For me clip+<gumstick<Sflo2<QA350<602 less than equal to DACPort depending.  They are apples and oranges the last two, hard to say.

Thanks - appreciate that its not always 'A is better than B'. The MSII isnt the most revealing DAC I have owned, but it makes 90% of my music sound better to my ears - I fear that something like the QB-9 would reverse that ratio for everything bar classical. Few products have had the kind of reception that the DACPort has been given - exciting times for affordable DACs, IMO.

Meh, I think anything should have perfect playback. It shouldn't be slow or out of tune.

Are you positive about this? Are you saying that Rockboxing the Clip+ will defeat any and all the firmware issues (more specifically the playback issues with being slow/fast and have a low/high pitch and ultimatel being out of tune)? Apparently, the Clip has slow playback and a low pitch and the clip+ may have fast playback and a high pitch. If you know for a fact (I am interested in your source) that rockboxing will completely eliminate these issues then I am all for it.

What does Rockboxing do? I know it is different firmware but does it completely replace the old?
