Hrm... definitely enticing... although I am not so sure I like the blue chassis but hey... looks are not a priority for me anyways :P.

 

But 1200$ converted to CAD, shipped, and then taxed at 15% makes it a fair bit more expensive than a used woo or a MAD ear...

 

MAD is located in another province so I would only have to pay GST and not PST bringing total costs up to 870$.

 

Also I am just wanting to get my feet wet right now with something good - it doesn't have to be the best.

 

 

 

How "tubey" does the sonett sound? I like that the MAD supposedly can be anywhere from super lush to not lush at all.

Hrmm, there's quite a bit to choose from.  For tubey sound, it sometimes depend on the tubes you use.  I only have brief experiences with tubes but I've heard different ones and the type of tubes do make a difference.  I think, and I'm not too sure, but you may have to pay your own provinces GST and PST on the item.  But, I don't know how MAD do their transactions.  I know buying off Canadian sites I was subjugated to my provincial taxes on the items, not the province that I was buying the item from.  I bought an item off Fulcrum Audio and was charged 12%.

Never heard the MAD, but as a Leben Lover, I am certainly a fan of the EL84, in the right amp.

Much like Canadapost with international packages, I think the taxes are random sometimes. Sometimes you only pay the one, sometimes both, sometimes it's the combined HST, etc.

 

Or just buy off the forums and/or canuckaudiomart.ca and save yourself the hassle.

depends on the company I think..

 

amazon.ca charges full tax, NCIX -a canadian company only charges me GST because they do not have an entity in my province.

The leben uses the same tubes... you don't say ;)

 

now I know that doesn't make this certain magic... but it has a great reputation and shares the DNA of the leben... keeps getting better and better.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think that the Sonett is a really cool looking amp because it is blue. But it's a couple of hundred bucks over your budget. I really like the aesthetics of the Woo and MAD amps as well. The Woo's wouldn't look out of place in Fritz Lang's Metropolis, and the MAD's could be powering a honky tonk piano in a saloon bar scene from a John Ford western.

Well I wasn't interested until I saw the price (don't need speaker taps or a USB port that are eating into the price) but thats not a bad price at all.

 

I was hoping to hear this "SET magic" though and it is a pentode but I will definitely consider it.

I also love he does not go ON AND ON about BS the way Steve Deckert does... and when emailing jack he doesn't really give much technical information (actually none) and just gave me audiophile terminology which is entirely usless. Lloyd does not seem partake in this and that alone makes me a fan.

 

Not to mention it seems like it will drive all the headphones I have... and the DT 990/ 600 and the T1 sounded absolutely magical on it...

 

I just want to try and get exactly what I want for the money because I am tried of losing money in to shipping and customs constantly swapping gear.. I would like to be able to buy a tube amp and have it stay for a while.

 

But the MAD definitely looks more and more enticing..

And you support "Buy Canadian". Dr. Lloyd is a great guy too...but then, aren't we all (Canadians that is tongue.gif)?

That is usually the best way to audition over a few days at home with your music and without distractions (like at a store or meet). What tubes will he be lending you? PM me if you want some suggestions. Cheers.

The Crack amp reportedly does not work very well with the LCD-2. My experience with orthos on mine is much the same. It just doesn't put out enough juice for them. It sounds absolutely wonderful with Senns though, and utter magic with my Sextett. I would suggest maybe the S.E.X. amp by Bottlehead if going that route.
