Treble Buzz from CMOY-style amp.

Last week I built a Banzai V2 18v CMOY amp.  This is my first amp build, and the first headphone amp I've owned.  I've been using it for a week without any problems to speak of.

I noticed a phenomenon today at work where I'm getting a pretty pronounced crackling buzz with peaky treble (high-pitched piano notes, etc.)  It sounds a bit like a blown speaker, or a driver being over-driven.  I noticed it first listening to Copland's Appalachian Spring, which I was playing through the onboard sound on my work iMac.

I've only been able to hear the buzz through my Beyerdynamics DT770's and I can hear it in both channels.  It doesn't seem to happen with my Portapros, although I suspect the lack of high-end detail could be the reason.

The weird part is that if I crank the amp to maximum and turn the computer volume down, the crackle goes away.  As I decrease the volume on the amplifier, even without increasing the computer volume, the treble starts to break up.  It sounds a bit like clipping, however with the more alarming "buzz" that typically means there's something wrong with your speakers.

So basically, it sounds clear and fine (if with a bit of background hiss) at full-volume, but anywhere below seems to cause breaking up and distortion in the pronounced treble.  Is it possible that there's something wrong with my op-amp?  It's a JRC 2068DD.

It's hard to say.  A scope trace on the output would help alot. :)  If it was a "static" like sound that fluctuates, I'd say you're getting audible oscillation.  You could be clipping, but it's hard to say.

Remove the pot from the circuit and feed the source input directly into the amp input.

What voltage levels are you feeding into the circuit?

pictures of your build will help.

I'm a total newbie to this stuff, and know very little about the amp which I assembled entirely from a kit.  The only alarming thing about this is that the problem only seems to manifest itself through my Beyerdynamics DT770 headphones.  I tried to reproduce it through my Portapros, Sennheuser CX150's and even my Grado SR225's and couldn't.  I would assume there was something wrong with that set of headphones, except for the fact that it's only that particular amp which causes the sound.

It's a very distinct buzz that sounds like blown drivers, but it goes away when I turn the volume UP.  Directly after discovering this phenomenon, I bypassed the amp and plugged them right into the sound card (dreading the worst) and couldn't reproduce the sound at any volume level.  If I set the output level low enough from the computer, and the volume pot anywhere below maximum, I can make the sound occur at very low levels at which the headphones would never distort.

I have no oscilloscope, as I'm pretty new at this, and they're very expensive.  I'll snap some pics when I have the opportunity.
