Which Type Is More Malicious To The Ears In Prolonged Listening Sessions - Open Or Closed...

I am planning to purchase a headphone but do not want to damage my ears in the long run by listening to loud music through the it. From a technical point of view, which type of headphone is more easy to the ears? I suspect open-type headphones since they do not store energy around the ears and let the sound escape through the vents, thus minimising pressure build-up around the ears.

I hope a few experts would chime in and advise.

Thanks in advance.

Either type will damage your ears. It depends solely on the Decibels and either type will put out enough to damage your hearing.

You should reconsider listening to headphones at a loud level. If you do that long enough, you won't be able to enjoy music any more. Think about it.

Thanks a lot for the prompt response Uncle Erik. It was useful and much appreciated. Guess I"ll just listen to music at moderate volume levels. My right ear was slightly damaged when listening to loud music through my hifi system during my younger days(possibly above 100dB) as now it doesn't hear too well as the left. I need to practice good listening habits from now onward to preserve my hearing until I reach my 60s.

Cheers.

High freqs damage the ears more than low freqs. Also, I notice that I have the tendency to ignore mid/high freq loudness if bass is not loud enough. Closed-back headphones tend to have more bass than open headphones, but there are absolutely exceptions.

But listening at low volume is a much better idea. The brain will adapt to low-listening levels.
