I believe the Auzentech X-Fi Forte in my system is reaching the end of its days. Several weeks ago, I started encountering a well-known problem where the sound turns "robotic" for no apparent reason. That then progressed to its current state, where the sound card mysteriously vanishes out of the blue - the sound cuts out completely and the computer becomes unable detect the Forte at all. Nothing short of a reboot fixes it. Trying to change the mode locks up the system and switching slots doesn't do anything.
Frankly, after putting up with Auzentech's less-than-stellar service and crappy software for so long, I'm ready to move on even if that doesn't mean the Forte is dying. There are certain interested parties who are willing to help me as a Christmas gift, but I need help making a quick decision. I estimate the gift budget to be ~$300 and I can maybe toss in another ~$100 if I cash in my coin jar.
My previous setup was Forte -> Klipsch iFi. The iFi works, but I've never been happy with how its subwoofer is practically mute even cranked all the way up. I also have a pair of 2003 Beyer DT880s (not sure of their ohmage). Other than perhaps needing new earpads, they're just fine.
I listen exclusively to classical music and I'm 99% sure my gaming days are behind me.
The most basic choice would be to go with a decent sound card like the Xonar Essence ST(X) or Claro Halo. I would defer to the Claro Halo because (1) HT Omega seems to have a better reputation for service and (2) Newegg is currently including a free lefty mouse with it, which for this poor southpaw is almost unheard of.
I could also explore a completely new setup, like a pair of bookshelf speakers, but at this budget, I don't think it'd be worth getting rid of the iFi.
What would you do?
