Question: fitting a 'smaller' tip onto a 'larger' IEM?

Hi all! I'm new here. I apologize if this is a silly/newbie question. My Etymotic ER6i's failed on me recently and Ety has refused to replace them, because they're out of warranty (which is understandable in my book -- no complaints).

I purchased a pair of Head-Direct RE0's and I'm loving them. My only complaint stems from the fitting of the stock tips from Head-Direct. The silicone or whatever irritates my ears. The fit is not particularly great either. I've managed to fit (with a bit of difficulty) my Etymotic triflanges onto the RE0's. The diameter of the hole in the Etymotic tips are approximately 2-3mm smaller than the Head-Direct tips.

Any comments on whether this is a bad idea in terms of audio quality? based on other users' previous experiences? As far as I can tell, the isolation is much better (probably because of the superior fit) with the Ety triflanges. There is a bit of a reverb/echo, from what I can tell.

Thanks all! :)

The Ety tips/sleeves will never fit on the RE0 -- they are just too small and would really constrict the sound if you could get them on.  Nor will most Shure or Westone tips fit (EXCEPT Shure E2c tips WILL fit the RE!).

You could also try any of the numerous different tips out on eBay -- many say silicone, but the material may not bother you as much as the RE0 stock tips.  Any tips that fit Sony, Creative, Sennheiser, etc will fit on the RE0.  (The material of the Ety ER6i tips is silicone, but it hasn't bothered you, I assume).

If the rubber/silicone type tips do irritate you, then you could try Comply foam tips http://www.complyfoam.com/products/index.php?strProductName=T{48}400&strModelName=RE{48}0  (TX-400 has wax filters built in).
