good dj-ing headphones please

Thread Starter
hello

just sold my old hd580s, as i'd got bored of them, so want a new set of cans, to listen to the computer with and also to dj with, on an amateur level.

the headphone output would be out of a Behringer VMX100

I've tried so called 'dj cans' such as AKG K271s which were coloured as f*** , had a woolly bass and became really sweaty

the hd580s didn't convey enough of the bass to mix to

i have some staxs around but the lead isn't long enough to take to the computer (long story)

so, any other dj can suggestions, for around £80 or less

The Sennheiser 25's are supposedly really good. But they are only good for dj'ing, not general purpose.

The Sony MDR-V700 is very popular w/djs because of it's swiveling earpieces, but I have them and am not crazy about them.

I have the V700s, but I actually like the way they sound (please don't stone me!). The offer a lot of isolation.....and the bass is actually pretty tight. I think you could do a whole lot worse than the V700s for DJing. The fact that you can easily do the one earphone thing (without any worry of them falling off)is a big plus for DJs.

Just my 2 pennies.

DJ cans

3 suggestions...

Sony V6 (NOT V600) - $40 refurbished @ eCost.com or $70 new @ millionbuy.com
- The ol' reliable studio monitor. Same as Sony 7506 without the gold plug. Recessed mids and boosted everywhere else (can get a bit harsh in the upper mids, also has excellent bass extension). Ear padding is a little thin and can get uncomfortable with extended use (You can make them more comfortable by replacing the stock ear pads with Beyerdynamic DT250 pads for around $25 including shipping)

Ultrasone HFI-550 Beatmaster - $130 @ www.meier-audio.de
- New model from Ultrasone. They also make a "DJ" model, but I chose this one because of the emphasis on upper bass freqs (which I find more useful in a beat-oriented mixing environment than deep bass). Design is very similar to the Sennheiser HD 280 Pros but more comfortable. Isolation is greater than the V6s but less than the 280 Pros (probably around 20dB). Simulated 3D sound can make them sound a little distant, but I think this has something to do with their lower SPL at same perceived loudness (which is easier on your eardrums).

Sennheiser HD-25 - $144 @ www.etronics.com
- Powerful, upfront sound - the king of maximum SPL. High isolation is obtained by supra-aural seal on your ears (which can get uncomfortable with extended use).

Why? Serious question, I'm in the market for a good set of closed cans for general purpose listening, and I'm considering the HD25's.

Don't have a clue, why the HD25 supposed is supposed to be for DJ'ing only ? I would choose it over a HFI-650/700 any day. How lucky can I be... just found out there is a big warehouse a mile away with pro/audiophile oriented headphones - which let's one audition what they have .... But I think they wouldn't be that great for DJing, because of the 5' , non-coiled cable. But I am not a DJ, and am using it for pure listening, only, and am very sattisfied with the tone it has vs. price. But for £80 in the UK ? Hard to find it for that.... The 25SP offers a 10' cable... but I would suggest going for a HD280 over it.... Hmm.. when thinking about it, I think the Audio-Technica ATH-A500 is what you have been looking for.

I second the recomendation for the HD280s. They offer great isolation so you can shut out all of the crowd noise to hear what is going on in your mix. They can also do the swivel thing. They can be had for awesome prices and I think for THIS purpose are really only going to match up with the V6s for price/performance value.

They are also good for personal listening as well so all will not be lost on just a "DJ" headphone. Movie watching is a blast with these things.

They have their issues with reproducing loud bass but they are very accurate and tight to make up for it. I can't imagine a DJ wanting a bass rumbler anyways. Loud bass over extended periods of time can become fatiguing. Especially when doing the DJ one ear thing.

Good luck.

The 25's can be uncomfortable for extended listening, from what I've been told.

I'm a dj, and I currently use the Sennheiser HD-25SP, the cheaper cousin to the HD-25. I'm not a huge fan of supra-aural 'phones, but these sound pretty good to me. I can deal with any minor comfort issues, since I only wear them for a 3-4 minutes at a time. I wish they had a coiled cord, however.

Thanks for the info', I'll make sure that I get an extended try out of them before I commit.
