The Audio Technica wing system is super comfortable, though not very stable. I would say any of them are easily more comfortable than the Shures.

 

The Shure pads are very soft and provide good isolation. The gripe with the 840 is the lousy headband. It's huge and heavy and has a stupid unnecessary rubber chunk in it, which is also somewhat flat and places a lot of pressure on the top of your head. If you have a wider head that contours just right, it's quite comfortable. If not, you get all that weight on the top which is very uncomfortable.

Hi all. thanks in advance for your help, you guys have a great thing going!

 

I'm looking for closed, around the ear headphones, $100 or less, that have decent base and isolation is important. I'd also like them to be comfortable (crown is about average circumference). 

 

I listen to dubsteb, classical, rap, blues, rock, and would like the headphones to improve my gaming experience (surround sound ideal but not necessary or even likely at my price point).

 

What do you recommend? Thanks very much!

 

edit: ive been looking at the Sennheiser hd428s, if that helps.

What about US$ 160 for an HD201?

That's why i don't buy phones here @ home.

Unfortunatly, i amazon denies shipping of anything but books and cds to Brasil.


I was looking @ ebay for the 840, but i don't know if it's safe to buy on ebay, never tried.

Comparing the A700 directly with the Shure 840 (comparing the two cans) - the A700 is definitely more comfortable because of it's design.  SQ wise, I much preferred the Shures.  And FTR I found the Shures supremely comfortable - just a little heavy.  The problem is that with the 840's most people either love or hate the comfort.  You're best to try them first if you are considering the 840's.

 

Do you know any good stores on either Boston or New York?

Ok, what do people think of:

Ipod                                       Schiit Asgard             AKG K702

Kenwood Dp-730 cdp              Little Dot 1+               Sennheiser Hd600
 

I own both the Ipod and Cdp already, and need an amp and Headphones (the amp is needed to power headphones from the Cdp.
I need an amp and Headphones, I currently have Samson Sr-850s, which are ok, but not great.
Any alternative amps or headphone suggestions are welcomed.
I listen mostly Alot of Prog Metal, Alt/indie, and some Jazz and Classical.
I don't like my music to be too in my face, so laid back is good, But clarity and accurate reproduction of the music is what I would like
I Do like Strong mids, as this where the Guitar sits in a mix, And as a guitar player, I like to hear them really sing.

Not sure about Boston - but for NY I make sure I go to either JR (http://www.jr.com/category/audio/headphones/) or B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/browse/Headphones-Accessories/ci/12568/N/4289367046) each time I travel.  Both have very good areas to demo headphones.  Staff are good as well.  The team at JR were quite happy for me to open cans off the shelf if they weren't plugged in on their demo rack.  They knew I was buying - which probably helped wink.gif

You should be able to find the HD448 for that price. Also consider the Shure 440 if you want some more isolation.

Definitely go with the Senn if you'd like a more laid back sound, and powered with tubes (I happen to like the Bottlehead Crack; I haven't heard the two you listed). Also consider an AKG K240.

What do you think is best for Dance/house and hiphop production ?

HD280 - DT 770 PRO - DT 990 PRO (because I heard the closed on the 770 can be tiring to the ears).

 

Or do you have other suggestions ?

Easily the HD280. The other two are far too bassy for production if you want any hope of getting your mixes actually balanced correctly.

The little dot 1+ is a hybrid tube amp I believe, and the Schiit asgard is ss class A.
The HD600's do sound nice out of the Asgard apparently, Haven't heard much about the Little Dot 1+ with the HD600s
It's just cheap, I can get hold of it locally in New Zealand, and I have read some good things about it.
The K240's are on the list too, and they are around half the price of the K702s and Hd600s

Ok. I did hear the HD280 has a certain 'lack' of bass. Is that correct?
I don't want too much bass, but def don't want a lack of.

Are there better option perhapse, within a price-range of 150 bucks

I should have mentioned that I have an iphone 3gs -- I read that iphones cant power those. I care mostly about bass, comfort and isolation, any other ideas?

HD448 is 32 ohms.  Shure 440 is 44 ohms.  iPhone 3gs should power them fine.

 

My iPod Touch G4 and iPhone4 both powered my SRH840's with no issues.

It's meant for mixing and production. There's no 'lack' of bass. There's realistic bass. They're overall pretty flat.

How about the MDR V6? Little more bass, cheaper...and industry standard.
