Loved the sound signature of the M-Audio Q40s (I am a bit of a basshead haha!) but the comfort was pretty bad. I'm fussy when it comes to headphones as I wear glasses and have a larger than average head/ears. I swapped the Q40 pads to the Beyerdynamic velour ones, but the Q40s unfortunately hurt my jaw like mad, even after I'd stretched them. Is there anything with a similar sort of sound signature that are more comfortable that isn't the DT770 Pro?

The comfort of the DT770 Pros was amazing as the earcups actually fit around my ear, but the sound was too recessed for my liking.

Okay, completely new to this, been here for literally maybe 5 minutes. So, as per my username, I am a guitar overlord, but I've never paid too much attention to personal headphone practising, since I just use amps openly. I'm looking for a good pair of cans that are BELOW 150 dollars that I will be able to simply plug into my amp and play and also be able to put into my desktop and be able to listen to. I've been choosing between Senn HD280 pro, AKG 240 Mk I, Shure SRH440, or Audio-Technica ATH M50. I listen to everything from thrash/death metal to classical, but most of the music I listen to is metal. Also, I don't have a headphone amp or DAC whatsoever.

So, in conclusion, I'm looking for headphones that are:
~ Under $150;
~ Good for un-amped desktop listening to metal;
~ Good for simply plugging it into a Line 6 Spider and just playing;
~ Good overall sound quality and
~ Able to put out up to 90 decibels on a desktop

Other notes:
I'm very worried about all the technical stuff, like impedance and whether or not my desktop will be able to put out enough wattage to drive my headphones to a reasonable loudness, but I don't know much about all of it, so if anyone is able, please suggest headphones and help me.

Thanks to everyone in advance for accepting a newbie like me.

Hey guys, not new here, but I've been lurking for a couple months over a year and just found reason to make an account.

My first cans were, of course, the ATH-AD700's, second were the Sennheiser hd555's, and most recently I've owned a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's (250 ohm), which I'm currently in the process of selling. I only ever owned one can at a time, but recently got enough money to buy a pair of Shure srh840's as well as open cans for home listening once I sells the Beyers. I want open cans particularly for the soundstage and detail, and I can listen to all my electronic music with the Shures, so bass isn't an issue. I loved the infamous Sennheiser veil, so I was looking for either the hd558 or, more preferably, the hd598, but can't find either of them on a good enough deal. Can you either point me to a deal for either of these or recommend some other good open cans in this price range?

I am looking for closed cans that have similar sound signatures of grado 60/80/125 series...
Any suggestions?

The closest I've heard is the Ultrasone HiFi 780 and Pro 750.  That's not to say that they sound the same as the Grado SR house sound.  Other than an (open) Alessandro, nothing else does.

Do they have to be closed?  A the cans you listed are closed.  If so, check out the Sony MDR-7510 or the less efficient but cheaper MDR-7506.

For what your looking to do I say just go for the Audio-Technica ATH M50 because they sound good and would be perfect for your needs imo.

The Senn veil and detail don't go together very well.  The HD 558 and 598 are fine cans, but are not exactly the detail monsters.  The AKG Q 701 and Beyer DT 880 are better at that.

What's your budget?  The Senns are subject to a MAP in the U.S. and elsewhere, so you'll have to keep your eyes glued to the "The Deals II" thread in this section of the forum.

I don't think that the recessed mids of the M50 and guitars go that well together.

I personally believe the M50s don't really sound that good. They are not smooth, and have very recessed mids. Grados are known for being the best of the best for rock and metal, so I'd definitely look into those. Without a smooth headphone, you can't really listen to classical, though.

Need a recommendation for a new set of cans. I listen to mostly metal/post-hardcore/rock/acoustic. Will be listening at home with a fiio e07k. I have a DT880 premium 250ohm that I really love, a DT990 pro 250ohm which I like, an HD25-1ii that I really love, and a Custom One Pro which I tolerate. My current iems are GR07 mk2. I guess I just want something different sounding.

Right now I've been thinking of the sr225i or the Q701. My only issue with the 225i is the comfort issue and that I could spend a bit more and get the 325i if they would be that much better. And the Q701 seem like too much of a sidestep from my 880s. I just want something that will have crisp highs, smooth mids maybe a little more upfront than the 880, and a tight punchy bass with good extension.

I'm looking to spend around 300 and preferably off of Amazon. Will go higher for better choices.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

My budget is under $200 if I can sell the Beyers, but preferably closer to $150, and right now only about $120. I've also heard the Q 701's are effectively more expensive K 701's. Have you heard both? Also is the Grado Prestige line good for detail? I've read complaints about sibilance and discomfort but the 125i's are a piece of cake to find in my price range and I can always change out the earpads.

Thanks for replying

Ideally you'd want to go for RS1's if you listening exclusively to rock. But that's like $450 used. And personally, I didn't really like the 701's with rock.

In any case, you could always try the Magnum v4 or v5's which are a about as the level of the RS1's but with different sound sig if you dont want to drop $400+ on cans. :p

But of you're going to stick to the amazon thing between the 701's and SR225's, I'd go SR225 given your rock preferences. I suggest getting a used pair though... knowing upgraditis, you could be easily selling off the cans in a matter of months because you feel like moving on - might as well cut the losses ay?
