Amazon dropped the price for very short time on the AKG K-240 Semi Open Studio which is the update of the K-240 Monitor so I grabbed a pair. Waiting on delivery. Can't wait.

I just got the mdr 1r and while they are great for portable use and home use, i know i can get something with a wider soundstage for gaming and rock for home use in the same price range.

Cans i see that are recommended the most include: SR225i, MA900, hd598.

Best open rock and R&B headphones in between $200 and $300

Indoor, Gaming

Ipod 4, Galaxy Media Player, 270-320kb/s, maybe fiio e11 or e6

Dont need isolation

Something with a wide soundstage, and sounds like the mdr 1r with mid emphasis, or at least just no recessed mids.  SR80i were good for rock but too uncomfortable without mods.

There's generally nothing wrong with throwing an amp in between an highly efficient can and its source. Most of the time, it will help. I, too, was looking at the MDR-7520, but I just happen to find a real great deal on a Shure SRH940 instead. When I get around to it, I'll seek out the 7520 just to hear it.

Maybe throw the Shure SRH840 and DT770 Pro just to have something else to compare the 7520 to.

Go with the HD 598. 

The Grado is designed for slam and the Grado wall of sound.  That is not the best for gaming and a wide/deep sound stage.

They are a good closed can in their price range with a good amount of features, like their removable cable, for their price point.  You might want to swap out their ear pads with the replacement pads for the SRH 840, which are significantly more comfortable to many due to their memory foam.

I seek wisdom regarding the Hifiman HE-500 and HE-400.

I want to buy either of these headphones, however I have only heard the 500. To be frank, I was absolutely blown away by it. I think it could be my 'end game' headphone.

My problem is that where I am in Germany I cannot find an HE-400 for audition to compare to the 500. 

My main question is: What are the noticeable and notable differences between the two and are the extra 300 euros truly worth it?

I listen to quite a lot of rock and acoustic music, and wonder if the dip in the upper mids of the HE-400 would badly effect the genres for my taste (I love Grados mids and treble for rock but I don't like the bass roll-off). 

I'm selling my Grado RS2i to fund the new headphone.

For reference - That leaves me with Senneheiser Momentum, Beyer DT990 (vintage) and AKG K241 (vintage)

If you have to dump your RS2i, only the HE 500 is a clear step up.  The 500 is neutral with it all there.  You can read about the 400, 500 and even your Grado here:

Sennheiser, although I'd pick up a used 600 or 650 instead of a hd598.

I would go for the 500 if you know you like it. Most people consider it an upgrade from the 400 and also the RS2i

I'm looking to upgrade from my current combo of Cowon S9 + Audio Technica AD700s, I'd like to keep the S9 as it is a great little player (battery lasts for ages and it sounds great) but I need new headphones and possibly a DIY portable amp (I'm looking for a desktop DAC and an amp secondhand as I can't afford new) but back to the headphones...

I like tight punchy bass and am not a fan of boomy bass - I listen to a lot of progressive and 'regular' metal (Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Ihsahn, Cynic, Gojira, Bloodbath) but I also enjoy the musical stylings of Steven Wilson, the Dire Straits and Pink Floyd.

My budget is ~$500 AUD for the headphones is this adequate to upgrade from the AD700s?

Yes--it should be enough to upgrade--based on a rough idea what you can get in Australia for that money.

What is the format of your music and other sounds you will putting into these cans?

Describe the sound signature that you are seeking?

I'm looking to hear some real life differences from people who have lived with both or at least done direct A-B comparisons.

While I agree with a lot of the things said in the "57 Flagships" about all the headphones I've heard listed there, I don't want to base a 700 euro decision on one man's opinions. 

Hey, I've been looking to buy some music only headhphones (since i already have my gaming ones), and I've been looking into the V-Moda M80s, speacially since i listen to a lot of electronic music.
Anyways, is there any other headphone I might look, or should I just ge those? (my budget is pretty much $200)

There are others to look at, but first...

• Budget of $200.
• Where/how do you plan on using these can?
• What are your isolation needs? Open or closed cans?
• What kind of music do you listen to and what's the format/bit rate?
• What source device will it be coming from and what amp, if any, will you be using?
• Do you know what kind of signature you're trying to find?
