I've only personally heard the DT770s. If you are looking for smooth top end, those would do it. Pretty decent soundstage and separation too. I've seen them referred to as "basehead" phones, but that was not my experience.  They do have a very nice, detailed low end, but not as pronounced as the Pro 700s  you are using now.

I used an E11 Amp with them and I thought they sounded pretty happy. They have a pretty low impedance and are designed to be used with portable music players. You CAN run them off an iPod, but of course, they sound much more dynamic with an Amp.

I am not very familiar with describing a sound signature that i like but by overly detailed i mean that the sounds seem to crisp especially in the highs and it hurts my ears after listening for a little.

I think that you do not like bright headphones.  That is not the same as being detailed.

There are a number of cans with recessed highs (like the Shure SRH 840), but what are looking for in your mids and bass?  Is a large sound stage important?  We can't be of much help unless you can tell us about the sound you want them to deliver.

I tend to be pretty picky about treble, so for now I'd like something with more pronounced mids and lows, probably saving a brighter headphone for a later buy. As far as budget I'd like to stay in the price range of $300-400, though I'm willing to pay more for the right headphone.

That helps, but it's still not enough to give you a quality recommendation.  Check out the buying guides linked in the opening post of this thread.  Tell us which ones you like and why.

I'm not quite sure if I know what you're asking for, so apologies if I come across as being tedious or uninformative. If what you want to know is my thoughts on various models I am considering, I included that in my first post.

Audio Technica ATH M50S

My “safe” choice, since these seem to come very highly recommended for their price range, that said, I am willing to spend more on headphones than these would cost and if I could get a better pair for a higher price I would prefer to.

Beyerdynamic DT 880

The set I like the most so far. Their frequency response graph on headphone.com looked promising and the cups are nice and large, the only big problem for me is impedance. The reviewer in this video said that the 32 OHM versions did not sound that great for what you pay for. They also said that the 250 OHM versions were decent on mobile devices, but nevertheless 250 OHM sounds pretty high to me for an un-amped mobile device. Also out of curiosity, is it possible to get the DT 880 PRO with a straight cable?

Denon AHD2000

This seems to be a very well-liked headphone. I have only heard good things about the Dx000 series, and this is definitely backed up by what I saw on headphone.com. On the negative side, the build style and general structure of the headphones looks, in a word, unorthodox. I do not want to be stuck with an awkward pair of headphones which I do not enjoy wearing. Additionally, I have been made aware that they were discontinued, and I’m not sure how long I want to spend hunting down a pair.

Sennheiser HD 650

I will start by saying that I should not like these headphones. The band looks pretty small and tight which has me worried, it looks like it would have a lot of leakage even compared to other open-backed headphones, and while Sennheiser lists its OHM at 300, it’s graphed as rising past 400 around the low-mids. Despite this, I keep coming back to the 650’s as an option. They look like a very good pair of headphones, and I’ve heard a lot of good things concerning the sound both from friends and around the net. To top it all off, it’s listed as the #1 pair of headphones on this site, which has to be worth something, right?

Please let me know if you are looking for more or different information, I would be happy to provide it.

I posted in here about two days ago. (forget about the hearing impairment nonsense, while testing I found out it hardly matters.) Yesterday I got the opportunity to test some headphones.

I'm tending towards buying the Beyer DT 880. Probably the 600 Ohm version.

I really liked them, very clear sound, but I am also interested in the Philips Fidelio X1. Problem is, I could not test these, but on the other hand I haven't seen any other headphones that received so many positive reviews. In fact, I could only find 100% positive reviews for them online, not one person who complained so far. The first hifi-magazine I checked even rated them as the "best of Hifi Test 2013", which compared it to many other good headphones.

Also, for the Beyer I'd need an AMP (would they also require a DAC?). I've been looking at the O2 (or possibly O2/ODAC, if that's required). Would that be a good choice? I want to spend no more than 250 or 300 € for an AMP (and possibly DAC, combined). I still couldn't quite figure out when exactly an AMP or a DAC or both are needed. But with the 600 Ohm version I am aware that at least one of these devices is definitely required.

I should say, I want to use the setup on my laptop or pc mostly, for listening to music.

So, any experience with the Beyer DT 880 compared to the Fidelio X1? And any ideas for good affordable AMP (and/or DAC) for the Beyer? Possibly the O2?

And with the Fidelio I guess I would need neither AMP or DAC, is that right?

Hey guys, I'm under the assumption that the Sennheiser PC 360 headset is discontinued (as I can't find it anywhere on the market), so I guess I'll have to move on from that dream... *sigh*

But I was just wondering what the next best set of cans would be. I don't mind if it's not a headset, I can always add a mic. I know this is a general question, but I just want to keep it around $300, and I will use these solely for gaming (possibly movies if they're good for that too).

Any recommendations?

Hey there,

I am new here, an audiophile from Saudi Arabia.

And I am amazed by the forum, looks very informative with a very knowledgeable members.

I mostly use my headphone on my PC with a perfectly ripped lossless CD's, or using the CD it self directly.

I have been using the HD650 and the Little Dot MK II for a year now, and I am looking to upgrade my set up with a DAC and a new headphone, 1-would that be a good upgrade ?

2-Just to be clear about upgrading the amp, MK II is giving the full HD650 amusement no ?, need someone to kick out the idea that I bought a great headphone and less amp :)

3-OK About the DAC, I thought about the ODAC but I am not really sure about it, as I feel that its not enough known and it has no famous brand, what would you suggest ?

4-The headphone I choose is the PRO 900, because I will be trying a completely new field, as its like the opposite brother of the HD650, ?

Finally the planned budget is $550, I can pay more if it will be a noticeable difference.(PS. I found the PRO 900 for $350)

Alright.
I'm in need of a new headphone, because I am discontent with my Custom One Pro.

I listen to mostly EDM (dubstep, house, electro, DnB, etc)
I have a cMoy BB V2.03 amp
I'm looking for something that's somewhat bright, and no bass emphasis. Something detailed.
I'd like it to have a decent soundstage. Doesn't need to be anything super.
Must be portable, closed back; detachable cable is a huge plus.
Being used for production on a home PC as well
Budget is around $200. Can go a bit higher if necessary.

What I didn't like about the Custom One Pro was that it was too dark and too bassy for me, and the 16 ohm impedance was too difficult for me to find a good driving source other than my phone.

I've taken into consideration the Shure SRH-840, which seems to me a great option, but, I'm not entirely certain. It may be a bit too heavy. But, if the sound is good enough, I wouldn't really care.
I'd like to get some other suggestions

Hi

Been considering buying some headphones for quite a while. I travel from time to time so noise cancelling is a must, also i prefer small as possible so i can pack more lightly without severely compromising sound quality. And last but not least, i would like them to be wireless, and able to be used with my computer/tv as well as my phone.

Is this an impossible task or can anyone help me out? I have absolutely no idea about how far wireless headphones are in term of quality, size and duration (battery or recharge? i assume)

If anyone can help me out, or enlighting me in any way it would be nice.

As taken from my recent thread...

Quote:

Hello

I'm not an "audiophile", which is basically why I came to see you experts, since you know what you're talking about (I don't). Bear with me...

Well I went and bought a headset for VOIP and the quality is great, but I have two big issues. I will be using the headset for cold calling and taking calls. Here are my issues:

1) Just outside my window there's noise every now and then, like car horns, dogs barking, kids screaming and all that. It's not incredibly loud, but my current VOIP picks it up, even if it's faint. If I click my fingers across the other side of the room, the headset still picks it up very clearly.

2) Sometimes the noise outside is actually genuinely irritating and while using the headset it can be pretty distracting with a dog barking or whatever in the background, sometimes I lose my train of thought.

So my question is: is it possible to get a high quality headset that...

a) cancels out all sounds except from my voice (so it only captures sound that's very close and immediate to the mic)

and b) prevents all background noise from getting to my ears, so I don't have to listen to everything going on outside.

I'd prefer not to spend loads of money but I guess it'd be money well spent if I can sort out those two issues above. Is it possible to deal with those two issues and to what extent?

Headset recommendations would also be appreciated!

Thanks!!!

ALSO: Preferred if I don't need to keep buying batteries for it or anything, just plug it into my PC and go!

So the amp is what powers the headphones. 600 ohm headphones will be way too quiet if you don't have a powerful amp, and even less powerful headphones can potentially have huge benefits from a good amp. A DAC is what converts all the 1's and 0's in digital music to analog form so it makes sense to your ears. Everything has a built in DAC, but an external DAC can remove a lot of noise and fuzz, and also render the music with more detail. Through a laptop I would definitely recommend getting both. There are several combination amp/DACs on the market if you want to keep things simple and all in one (HeadAmp, FiiO, Aune, etc. for manufacturers; I used the Aune T1, not  sure if it has enough power for 600 ohms).

Do you care about closed/open? For a while, Ultrasone marketed the old 700's specifically as excellent for DVDs (and then Alienware did the same for gaming). I can attest they're very good at both. The newer model is the HFI 780. You can get that for 150, and that would leave you budget to get a DAC if you don't have a good source already (like a gaming soundcard). HFI 780 and FiiO E17 would put you in at just under 300.

1.) Usually a good DAC will help a lot, yes. And it doesn't hurt to have an extra pair of headphones for something different.

2.) Well, you can ALWAYS find something better, even if you have a 5 thousand dollar amp. ;)

3.) It seems to be a popular choice. Another to check in that price range might be the Schiit Modi. Perhaps someone else can shed some light?
4.) PRO 900 will be VERY different. biggrin.gif Give your ears time to adjust, and let the headphones burn in for a bit before you judge too harshly. I'd honestly give them a good 20 hours before they even begin to settle down, and they continue to mature for quite some time after that.

EDM and no extra bass? What! lol

Shure would probably be good. You might also try the Sennheiser HD280 and its big brother the HD380. The 280 was too bass light for my taste, so it might be acceptable for you. That being said, I don't remember the soundstage being that good. 380 might be better, but I haven't tried it.

And now I'm finished answering all these poor lost souls that everyone's ignoring. :P

No offense intended, but you say you don't like bright headphones.   In contradiction to this 3 of the 4 headphones on your list are bright.  The only one that isn't is the HD 650.

If you are in the U.S., you must not be looking very hard.  One example:

I could find a number of cans that are more complementary/opposite to the HD 650 before I'd reach the Pro 900.  However, if you want to to from a mid bass hump to full basshead territory  in a quality and somewhat expensive way, the Pro 900 could work for you.

If history serves as a guide. most folks that regularly check this thread are not particularly knowledgeable about or particularly interested in wireless cans.  I can refer you to this for some quality recommendations:
