What sound signature are you seeking in your cans?

The sound sig that i enjoy is a punch but not overpowering bass and crisp uppers, I am willing to give up a little on the mids but not too much. Sorry about the bad description but i have not been doing this for very long. Going back to the amp i was not actually saying i wanted a tube amp, i know those cant be portable, so sorry for being unclear i was just wondering if there was an actual portable amp that had a similar sound to it.

Ultrasone HiFi 780 without an amp, or the better (and more expensive) Pro 750 with one.

If it's Monster, there's almost always going to be much better options, and this situation goes right along with that.

Would the 518s be good for recording? My only other options are 280/380 but I'm afraid they'll get uncomfortable because of the pleather. Anyone else w big ears?

If your are talking about Senns, the HD 518 is a bit too dark and not neutral enough.  Don't know about the other two.  Almost everything in that price range will have pleather pads.

If open headphones are an option, I can't stress how good the Takstar Hi2050 are, especially for the price. It's got velour pads, a somewhat-metal build, and is pretty neutral sounding. Goes for about $70 on eBay.

Mmmm...they are so new that there is no review on them at Amazon.  Saw your recent review here though.

Any of you guys listen to predominantly Metal (Sludge, Doom, Grind, Death)?  If so, what is the best can you have found for this type of music?  I currently have Grado SR225i which are really great except they really lack the bass depth/impact to full out the sound.  I am awaiting the new AKG K167 to try out; should have it next week.  I use a Fiio E17 for an amp which really helped the SR225i's but still not enough.

Any suggestions under $250?

Hi I'm planning on buying a pair of ATH-AD700 headphones and I was looking to do the "Dark Knight" mod but simply the recoloring part.

Is it possible to repaint the headphones without having to solder anything? (I have never used a soldering iron and do not want to ruin the headphones)

New isn't the term. Unknown is. They're pretty discrete here on Head-Fi. They really do wonders, though.

I'm looking for full-sized, noise cancelling headphones and willing to pay up to $400. After doing some research, I'm trying to decide between these headphones:
  • Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9
  • Bose QuietComfort 15
  • Sennheiser PXC 450

I've been able to try out the QC 15 and I really like them. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any stores in my area that have the PXC 450 and the ATH-ANC9 available to try.

I prefer closed and unamped. Right now, I use my HiFiMAN RE-0 at home and Apple Earpods everywhere else to listen to music on my iPod Classic 5th, iPhone 5, and laptop. I would use the headphones mostly for listening to music, which I think I spend around 6 hours per day doing, along with occasionally for TV shows and movies. I listen to rock, hip-hop/rap, and electronic. Examples are Adelitas Way, Sick Puppies, Eminem, Swollen Members, Glitch Mob, and Pretty Lights. I haven't owned any headphones before so these would be my first, but I'm hoping that spending a good amount of money would mean good quality and durability to last for a few years.

With the above information, which of these three headphones would you recommend for me? Are there any other headphones I should consider? If there is anything else you'd like to know that would help you make a recommendation, please let me know.

Thanks!

I thought the anc9 sounded hideous when i tried them. The bose actually sounded better honestly. In terms of sennys the mm550 is a better sounding headphone imo. Beware of senny's noise canceling technology as it sucks up a lot of the bass when anc is turned on.

I found that the 60 dollar able planet "linx audio" nc1100b sounded better than the bose. However the bose noise canceling far surpasses all of them. The able planet is a similar plasticy build to the bose and cancels out the airplane humm quite well but the bose does a better job overall.

I think you should do yourself a favor and get a very good isolating portable like the amperior or the dt1350 instead of any of the above. I have the beyers and they do the trick in public. I even used them in a noisy sports bar full of people with no problem.

Portable or desktop and at what budget level?

I received a pair of beyerdynamic MMX 2s as a gift earlier this week and I'm trying to decide what to do with them. Since I'm considering returning the MMX 2s I don't really have the option of opening them and testing them out, hence this post.

Right now I'm using JVC RX700s (with the foam mod) with a Xonar DG and a cheap Logitech desktop mic. My RX700s are in perfect working order and I'm pretty happy with the setup considering the price paid. I don't have a strong preference in the circum- vs supra-aural department, though I've gotten pretty used to the RX700s. From what I understand the MMX 2s ($100) are basically DT 235s ($60) with an added mic. I haven't gotten any complaints about my crappy Logitech mic, so that side of the equation doesn't really matter at this point.

I do a lot of gaming (FPS, RTS, racing, and pretty much whatever is on sale), though I also listen to a decent amount of music so I'm looking for the best all-around option. My music tastes are all over the place (Kanye just popped up after Blues Traveler), though it's probably skewed towards 90's rock/acoustic/alternative. I'm listening to standard MP3s with a $20 sound card so I don't think that qualifies me for audiophile status.

tl;dr - Should I go with the MMX 2 over the RX700, or is this a $100 sidegrade?

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,

I posted here awhile back regarding which headphone I should choose from, either the ATH 900x or the AKG 550. After auditioning them at Best Buy I decided to get neither. Instead, I'm torn between Denon AH-D600 or the Sennheiser HD 598. However, I never actually tried the HD 598 but I auditioned the HD 558.

I usually listen to J-pop, J-rock, Classical, and Instrumentals. So a lot of emphasis on female vocals, big sound stage, and sounds that are clear and detailed.

Which should I choose? Sennheiser HD598 or the Denon AH-D600.

Also, I'm leaning towards the Denons, but are they worth the extra $200?

Thanks again!

For the price of the Denon, I believe that there are better buys for your can money.  What they are will depend at least in part upon the equipment you will use to drive these cans and (probably to a lesser extent) the music and sound files/format you use.
