Best closed headphone with a closed sound?

 

Basically, all my headphones have really big soundstage, including the HD650 which has opened up a surprising amount as I've used it more and more. Now I'd like to try something a little different. Looking for closed back design with a unique sound sig that isn't necessarily wide sounding but more contained and intimate. Sound leakage doesn't matter. Any suggestions for under $500?

Hey guys,

 

I'm looking for a set of headphones for mainly music and a tiny amount of gaming and voice chat. There are a few requirements:

 

- Open (I don't really like closed headphones)

- There needs to be a some bass, but not too bass heavy

- An external soundcard with volume control

- Around $100 (excluding soundcard)

 

 

Can anyone give me a few suggestions?

so over the past few days ive been on the thread asking for headphones for my girlfriend with hyperacusis and i decided on getting the Mad Dogs or a unmodded pair of Fostex t50rp and mod them later...but im wondering if they are a good choice now because they are known to need alot of power and i dont have any headphone amps apart from using my Nad c372 stereo amp, would that be good enough for the Fostex/Mad Dogs? if so then i know what im getting :)

Alright Im leaning towards the 650s thanks! And I do plan on upgrading the amp to a o2 or something like that. I hadn't heard that the 650s had impressive mids,I had heard that the 600s had the better, slightly emphasized mids.

You need an amplifier with enough power for your speakers. A headphone amp is almost certainly insufficient.

If i use it as a dac, then do you have any recommendations to what I have to get? is the AMC 2100 something that would work? the dac would then be grace m903. Just asking to know that it is the right track I am going.

So after reading on here for awhile, ive decided to buy m50's. Im just making this post to see if I should look at anything else before buying. The main uses I will have for it are listening to music (ipod, mac). Also it will be used most for hooking up to my guitar amplifier. It is a tube amp and I play mostly heavy metal. Right now I have hd 201's but it just cant handle the high gain. Most of the music I listen to is heavy metal, classic rock, and my girlfriend will probably steal them for her dubstep. For now it wont be driven with an amp. But I am into audio electronics such as building amps so within the year I will build a headphone tube amp for them. Also I cant break $150 since its the budget i was given for a christmas gift and I dont want to be greedy. Basically for my genres and listening situation, should I try any other headphones?

 

P.S. I have done a side by side of the m50 and shure srh880 and liked the m50s for have a little more punchy lows. And I dont know if it will help, but the eq for my main guitar amp eq setting (5 being neutral) is low 8 mids 2 high 7 (typical metal rhythm settings)

(I've also had CALs and KNK KNS-8400s recommended. I think the CALs would be my ideal choice, but grrrrr they're just a bit out of my price range, and I don't have time to wait for the price drop).

Obviously anything I purchase will be a huge upgrade sound-wise over my current cheapos. But, I'm out of my depth knowing which I should choose, and why. From what I've gathered, I want a relatively large sound stage for movies/gaming, with a more mid-centric signature. But not underwhelming bass because of the movie experience?

Takstar Pro 80 (Gemini HSR-1000) closed headphones, I was able to get them (Gemini) from Woot (Tech) for $58+ $5 shipping + $5.20 Calif. sales tax. Total $68.20.

Woot does have lots of of bad reviews (1/3 of all reviews are negative), but getting headphones from them should be "low risk".

The only sale I found for those has long since been sold out.

Umm,

Hi (i guess).

I've been wandering around the internet for the last couple of days trying to find myself a pair of decent headphones, but every time i found a pair there was something putting me off (either comfort issues, price tag, sound, etc.) and i usually read the cons/pros on this site. Since i have absolutely no one to ask and shops that display relatively pricey headphones are non-existant in my country, i decided to make an account here and ask, i just need a few tips (probably).

 

Budget: <200$ (~150E)

 

Use: Mostly at my pc - I have a laptop connected to an external sound card (Sound Blaster X-FI Surround 5.1) and then i have my 2.0 speakers connected to said sound card (GENIUS SP-HF 1800A). The speakers kind of broke but i use them to fiddle with the sound here and there. Sooo i got a pair of Koss SB40's connected to my speakers, the dial on the speakers helps adjust the volume quite nicely, but im starting to notice that my Koss headphones just aren't cutting it anymore for me. I listen to a variety of songs but mainly J-related songs (j-pop, etc.) and my current headphones just dont handle the lyrics at that speed. I started off with a pair of like 10$ headphones and then finaly got my nerves to buy these Koss ones, the difference in sound amazed me (obvious, eh?), but its like rising the ranks, that about a year later i just want the sound to be clearer.

       Secondly on my phone/mp3 player, so i dont want the Ohms to be sky-high, i'd like headphones that dont need an amp (those things are expensive like a pair of golden blocks) (however 95% of my will be home based, so if something's good at home but not outdoors that's fine by me).

 

Requirements: Dont really know if i want them closed or open back, over ears, clear lyrics, able to handle fast songs while the sound doesnt get (too) distorted, a neutral performance (i dont want too much bass), just overall comfy and not too fragile, able to handle some rock, metal.

 

So far: I've gone through hundreds (literally) of pages, and what i gather is that a pair of ATH's would do me well, eg.:

ATH-A700x or ATH-AD900. 

I gather that AKG's are more bassy and stuff. (Though the AKG 272 HD's looked fine)

Sennheisers don't really look appealing to me, but i dont know, haven't seen them all.

 

However - I have a pair of pretty low-end heaphones right now (compared to what im looking for), so 90% of the flaws people point out in the said headphones i might not ever even notice. And this feeling of "will i notice it or will i not?" is a nightmare...

 

So, (if you managed to read all that blabber i am amazed) thanks in advance for any advice i (might) get.

Another possibility is the Beyerdynamic DT-235.  In addition to the DT-235, I have the Samson SR850, Philips Downtown, and CAL!.  I could live with any of the DT-235, Downtown, and CAL!.  The Downtown has very good bass and is best for travel, because of superior isolation.  The DT-235 has weak bass (relatively speaking), but maybe a better tonal balance for general use.  I have owned the CAL! for only a couple of weeks, and I am still trying to figure it out.  (I bought when it was $60---sorry!) If I had to be pushed for a recommendation now, I would go for the Downtown.

Hey,

I have been looking for awhile and i finally narrowed my search.  I listen to rap hip hop dubstep R&B.  I want headphones that are bassy but not over powering.  I have my search down to UE6000, ATH-M50LE, and Sen HD380 pro.  Please just let me know what you guys think.  Also, I will not be amping, this is another big aspect of my search.
