Haven't heard the Beyer yet.  The 419 is a drop in class from the 840.

No--these are serious professional studio quality cans.

Good, especially for this price class.  Again these are studio cans.

Ive got $150 and that's it, no more to spend, less is fine of course, then I could buy some new music.

I want to get a setup for my desk at work, the headphone out on my laptop is garbage, I do have a receiver and a set of speakers on my desk, but the headphone out on the bottom of the barrel 1960s Jc Penny/Penncrest receiver is even worse then the laptop. The speakers are surprisingly very good performers, Boston Acoustics HD5s that I nabbed for $12 at a thrift, see attached photo.

I listen to a narrow variety, Rock, Metal, Blues, little bit of Jazz(tho increasingly more), and very little hip hop/dupstep/rap, and just about zero 'pop' type stuff. I have a set of AKG K240 mkii's, and a set of ATH M35s, and I want something completely different than those two, I like new stuff. Open or closed doesnt matter cause I work nights and theres nobody around, comfort doesnt matter, my ears are so darn sensitive that all phones Ive ever tried hurt after an hour or so, and when I wear my glasses its even worse, so I just deal with it. I like bass, but Im content with the BA HD5s which are a tiny bookshelf with a 5.25in driver that only gets down to 55hz so its not a top priority. Mostly I just want something different to rotate in.

Since both my headphone out options are turds, Ill be needing a dac/amp as well and Im 90% set on a fiio e10 from adorama for $45 which leaves $105 on this gift card I have. Ive narrowed it down to

1. Grado SR80i(MS1 perhaps?)

2. Shure SRH440

3. ATH AD700

4. god only knows what else, I started looking at IEMs today, but I'm really not sure there but not against it either

What do you guys think?

Going for something different, go for Grado.  Better yet get there better sibling, the Alessandro MS-1.

Hi guys.  I have been doing a lot of reading around on headphones on the web lately and this forum always comes up in every search result, so about time I signed up and consulted the experts!  

I didn't realise there was a dedicated thread for recommendations until I got the welcome pm, so I appologise for the duplication.

Christmas is quickly catching up with me and my better half is pestering me for ideas.  The only thing I can think of that I am lacking is a half decent set of headphones.  

The trouble is, I don't like buying audio based on faceless recommendations if I can help it.  But the age of the internet has killed the traditional shops and there is literally nowhere I can find to demo some products.

There is a store relatively close to me that stock Grado headphones.  I listened to the iGrados and love the sound.  Yes I know they may not be the ultimate in SQ, but for their price point I can't fault them.

There are two issues that are holding me back though.  One is I think I might prefer the traditional over the head style, and the second is I am being put off by them being open back.  I know this generally means a better sound, but if I am wearing these at work, on the bus etc, I'm not sure I want to be sharing my music with the world.  

The first, it seems like the SR60 would be the obvious choice, if what I have read is correct, they are only a few more dollars than the iGrados.  But over here they are more than double the price!

And regarding the open back issue, then I guess that means I need to just look else where anyway.  

My music taste is pretty varied, I listen to everything, but leaning towards a slightly bass heavy sound.  But in no way would that be at the expense of all round sound quality.

Just looking online, the other headphones that are at my price point are the Sennheiser HD449.  Not sure what else is out there, especially without being able to hear anything!

What is your budget and where do live?

Grados/Alessandros leak a great deal of sound.  So they are not a good choice for public use.

If you are still interested in the Grado family, the Alessandro MS-1, which is better than the SR 80i, might be cheaper for you.  See:

I am in the UK, budget is around £70, could be pushed to £100 if it's worth it. 

I have had no joy finding the Alessandro MS-1 over here.  But if it helps recommendations, the SR60i is more my price level.  

But the sound leaking issue, if you can call it that, is still a concern.  Hence wanting to look at some others. 

Not sure if I mentioned before.  But I will be looking to use these with an ipod classic, maybe my phone too (HTC onex).

 Hello, I have recently decided to purchase some high quality head phones. My tastes normally go towards Audio-Technica as for my budget it is around 175 euro (around 230$ or 150 pounds) the place I can purchase products is from English websites like amazon ot thoman. As I said I have had no previous experience with serious headphones before. My music tastes are rather different, I like all kinds of music so I don't want anything specific. I don't listen to bass heavy music though, I prefer more clear sound and comfort, isolation is not a must but if possible I would like for the headphones to have it. I mentioned Audio Technica as a brand but it is not a must. What I also would like is a fairly good design, I don't want the cans to be too big since I will be walking with them outside and not use them only at home. To put it simply I want something with fairly clear sound, not to much bass, sturdy design and not too big cans. Thank you in advance for your help.

 Overall crytall sound but still having somewhat medium amount of bass. I don't know if I should use an equliser to say what I want exactly. I am also going to listen most of the time on a smartphone probably (Galaxy S3).
