So right now I am considering the shure srh 840s, the beyerdynamics custom one pros, and the sennheiser hd 419s. What are your thoughts/how would you compare these headphones.  Thanks

Haven't heard the Beyer yet.  The 419 is a drop in class from the 840.

Would you say that the srh 840s could be considered harsh or fatiguing in any way? Also, how is their bass extension? You mentioned that there is a mid-bass hump...does this mean that the bass drops off as you go lower?

No--these are serious professional studio quality cans.

Also, how is their bass extension?

Good, especially for this price class.  Again these are studio cans.

You mentioned that there is a mid-bass hump...does this mean that the bass drops off as you go lower?

It means it returns to near neutral.

You should read this:

http://www.head-fi.org/products/shure-srh840

From the buying guides linked in opening post of this thread:

"Shure SRH840, $140-$200. Isolates well, folds for portability, and good build quality. Accurate/punchy bass, great mids, highs are somewhat lacking."

and

"Relatively neutral overall, with ample bass. Similar build to the SRH440, with better stock memory foam pads. Might have some comfort issues with headband and weight."

Lets give this a shot..

Ive got $150 and that's it, no more to spend, less is fine of course, then I could buy some new music.

I want to get a setup for my desk at work, the headphone out on my laptop is garbage, I do have a receiver and a set of speakers on my desk, but the headphone out on the bottom of the barrel 1960s Jc Penny/Penncrest receiver is even worse then the laptop. The speakers are surprisingly very good performers, Boston Acoustics HD5s that I nabbed for $12 at a thrift, see attached photo.

700

I listen to a narrow variety, Rock, Metal, Blues, little bit of Jazz(tho increasingly more), and very little hip hop/dupstep/rap, and just about zero 'pop' type stuff. I have a set of AKG K240 mkii's, and a set of ATH M35s, and I want something completely different than those two, I like new stuff. Open or closed doesnt matter cause I work nights and theres nobody around, comfort doesnt matter, my ears are so darn sensitive that all phones Ive ever tried hurt after an hour or so, and when I wear my glasses its even worse, so I just deal with it. I like bass, but Im content with the BA HD5s which are a tiny bookshelf with a 5.25in driver that only gets down to 55hz so its not a top priority. Mostly I just want something different to rotate in.

Since both my headphone out options are turds, Ill be needing a dac/amp as well and Im 90% set on a fiio e10 from adorama for $45 which leaves $105 on this gift card I have. Ive narrowed it down to

1. Grado SR80i(MS1 perhaps?)

2. Shure SRH440

3. ATH AD700

4. god only knows what else, I started looking at IEMs today, but I'm really not sure there but not against it either

What do you guys think?

Going for something different, go for Grado.  Better yet get there better sibling, the Alessandro MS-1.

I know the most confortable headphones ever, i hardly doubt you are so sensible that it could hurt your ears

Philips Uptown is like a cloud on the head (even when i have glasses, and big sunglasses ones like Oakley Monster Dog), have a nice sound and match your budget (even cheaper maybe, but i don't really know the price where you live)

Hi guys.  I have been doing a lot of reading around on headphones on the web lately and this forum always comes up in every search result, so about time I signed up and consulted the experts!

I didn't realise there was a dedicated thread for recommendations until I got the welcome pm, so I appologise for the duplication.

Christmas is quickly catching up with me and my better half is pestering me for ideas.  The only thing I can think of that I am lacking is a half decent set of headphones.

The trouble is, I don't like buying audio based on faceless recommendations if I can help it.  But the age of the internet has killed the traditional shops and there is literally nowhere I can find to demo some products.

There is a store relatively close to me that stock Grado headphones.  I listened to the iGrados and love the sound.  Yes I know they may not be the ultimate in SQ, but for their price point I can't fault them.

There are two issues that are holding me back though.  One is I think I might prefer the traditional over the head style, and the second is I am being put off by them being open back.  I know this generally means a better sound, but if I am wearing these at work, on the bus etc, I'm not sure I want to be sharing my music with the world.

The first, it seems like the SR60 would be the obvious choice, if what I have read is correct, they are only a few more dollars than the iGrados.  But over here they are more than double the price!

And regarding the open back issue, then I guess that means I need to just look else where anyway.

My music taste is pretty varied, I listen to everything, but leaning towards a slightly bass heavy sound.  But in no way would that be at the expense of all round sound quality.

Just looking online, the other headphones that are at my price point are the Sennheiser HD449.  Not sure what else is out there, especially without being able to hear anything!

I know style is not the thing to look for.  But ignoring that a minute, in my eyes these are sexy!http://www.johnlewis.com/231638323/Product.aspx

I have also seen on t'web the AKG K142HD which are a tad over my budget, but I could maybe stretch that far if proved worth while.  They are gorgeous to look at.

What would your suggestions be?

What is your budget and where do live?

Grados/Alessandros leak a great deal of sound.  So they are not a good choice for public use.

If you are still interested in the Grado family, the Alessandro MS-1, which is better than the SR 80i, might be cheaper for you.  See:

http://www.alessandro-products.com/main.php?p=headphones

I am in the UK, budget is around £70, could be pushed to £100 if it's worth it.

I have had no joy finding the Alessandro MS-1 over here.  But if it helps recommendations, the SR60i is more my price level.

But the sound leaking issue, if you can call it that, is still a concern.  Hence wanting to look at some others.

Not sure if I mentioned before.  But I will be looking to use these with an ipod classic, maybe my phone too (HTC onex).

I've been looking at the next cans for now:

-Koss Pro DJ100 (are they too analytical for EDM music, I don't know?)

-CAL! (Do they have enough bass for EDM music?)

-Sennheiser HD 380 PRO

Do you have any cans to recommend with a "fun"(bassy) sound sig?

 Bumping my post.

I just talked about the Philips Uptown, it's not only about the look, the confort and the sound are great

Actually i'm not a fan of the look, i bought them because of the reviews (and i had a huge discount on them at my local store), and i needed a closed and cheaper phones than my L1 to go in public transport where i don't feel safe wearing 300€ on my head (and the L1 is semi open so it leaks a lot)

Hello, I have recently decided to purchase some high quality head phones. My tastes normally go towards Audio-Technica as for my budget it is around 175 euro (around 230$ or 150 pounds) the place I can purchase products is from English websites like amazon ot thoman. As I said I have had no previous experience with serious headphones before. My music tastes are rather different, I like all kinds of music so I don't want anything specific. I don't listen to bass heavy music though, I prefer more clear sound and comfort, isolation is not a must but if possible I would like for the headphones to have it. I mentioned Audio Technica as a brand but it is not a must. What I also would like is a fairly good design, I don't want the cans to be too big since I will be walking with them outside and not use them only at home. To put it simply I want something with fairly clear sound, not to much bass, sturdy design and not too big cans. Thank you in advance for your help.

I think that I want somewhat bigger cans, though they look good I somewhat don't feel that they are what I am looking for in terms of sound.

Lush - Very Rich/Full.

Detailed - Easy to hear tiny details in the music; articulate. Adequate high frequency response, sharp transient response.

Presence - A sense that the instrument in present in the listening room. Synonyms are edge, punch, detail, closeness and clarity. Adequate or emphasized response around 5 kHz for most instruments, or around 2 to 5 kHz for kick drum and bass.

Lush (2) - A "lush" sound has a sense of warmth and fullness. Notes are more authoritative and have a sense of life about them. It is a sound free of any sibilance or brightness. It does not mean colored, however. It is an open and inviting sound enveloping the listener into its soundstage. (source: unkown headfier)

Open - Sound which has height and "air", relates to clean upper midrange and treble.

Airy - Spacious. Open. Instruments sound like they are surrounded by a large reflective space full of air. Good reproduction of high frequency reflections. High frequency response extends to 15 or 20 kHz.

Overall crytall sound but still having somewhat medium amount of bass. I don't know if I should use an equliser to say what I want exactly. I am also going to listen most of the time on a smartphone probably (Galaxy S3).

You just said you wanted not big cans lmao. L1 are quite big, they are circumaural, bigger ones are 50mm and open (closed one are for DJ who works on clubs and are basshead oriented, you will just have the crap Beats type sound), they are not for mobile use (its a non-sense to say we wantbig open phones for portable use, especially with a S3 and at this price, even L& which are semi-open are not really good on a noisy environment, like they are not well isolated), and quality of sound isn't about the size. Read reviews instead judging like that, god i understand why there are not a lot of people to give advises on this topic, noobs are funny but also irritating when they say those kind of things because they read something on a site (like your copy/paste)
