but I can say Avoid the Pro 900 <3, I'd go for like Dt 990, maybe D5000 [getting close to 400] I've heard good things about the M-Audio Q40 as well... but Ath m50's aren't a bad place to start! if he really likes his music Bass heavy, he should look into getting a darker DAP and Amp

Hello all,

 

Newbie here, I am under the assumption low impedance headphones are better with portable amps. Please correct me if I'm wrong cuz I am still deciding

whether I should get the DT990 (600 ohmversion) of higher impedance or the Shure 940 lower impedance.

 

I don't tend to be home too often but mostly study in a quiet place(university student here). So I need a fullsize headphone I can bring with me during my numerous study sessions. I will definitely have a portable amp with me, either the Fiio E10/11 combo or a JDS labs c42.

 

So please give me some advice. My budget is roughly $300 for headphones and sub $200 for amps so $500 total. And if there are better headphones to get let me know. My taste in music is mainly classical metal(quite detailed music basically) so I basically want neutral headphones, no extra bass or anything, just headphones that let me listen to what the artist intended me to hear.

Whoa man if you want neutral and detailed music without much Color the Dt 880 is ur friend! I've got them and trust me... THERES NO EXTRA ANYTHING <3

 

The Dt 880 250s I like, I run em through a Hifiman Hm 601 [slighty warm and colored] with a cMoy BB 2.04 2x9V... so as far as amps go I'm not to to sure... the cMoy [without the Bass Boost] has the power you'll need and is a nice amp I must say, the Dt 880s ofc are wonderfully transient... meaning all u hear is what the artist put there for u... 

 

So go with the Dt 880 250, then focus on finding and VERY neutral DAP and Amp [if u have an Apple DAP then u should be fine] I've heard to that the Fiio E11 is a little warm in it's bass but very Cold and Lean every where else... still though I have the cMoy and I like it, the bass has nice detail without to much extra warmth! 

 

I listen to alot of Instrumental Sound Tracks with my Dt 880s as well so I understand what you mean by no extra anything! Well mastered music can be ruined by to much coloration...

What source(s) are you plugging the headphones into?

 

Unless you buy something like the O2 (Objective 2) portable headphone amplifier ($155) might be best not to get 600-Ohms headphones for on the go.

Headphones in the 25-Ohm to 60-Ohm are good for working directly with portable audio players (usually do not need add-on headphone amplifier).

Audio Technica ATH-A900X, 40-Ohm

AKG K550, 32-Ohm

Shure 940, 40-Ohm

Yea 600 Ohm are bad, but again the dt 880 Pro 250 Ohm is around $240, with a cMoy at $80, thats total $350 [with shipping and what ever] If you want transient though the Shures and AKG are also good, there is a 32 Ohm Dt 880 as well

 

But I do recommend getting a high Ohm can... as the higher Ohm Head phones have better quality control [espically when you amp them] not to say that lower Ohm cans are bad, but they don't have the control higher ones do...

Simply put, I have a modded pro700mk2, and I want a larger soundstage. So, it would be awesome if there is a headphone similar to the pros, but open. 

 

Current possibilities:

dt990 pro 250 

 

The dt990 pros seem to be the only choice that I know of, but I was just wondering if there are any other honorable mentions. Thanks. 

The Pro700mk2 is a basshead headphone, so the clear choices with a similar sound but a bigger soundstage would be the DT990. The DT770 is also good, but will have a smaller soundstage than the 990.  If you can go used, you could consider the Ultrasone Pro 900 as that will have all the bass you want and the S-logic on ultrasones is pretty good at increasing the soundstage

Tell me this guys... I'll try to put it in simple terms.

The ____________ headphone is to full sized as the Westone 4 is to IEM's.

HD650? One of the HExxx models?

Thats about the sig I am looking for in my next open set of cans. Had been thinking of the 880's but I think they are prolly a bit more sparkly than that.

Balanced but not bass bereft or incompetent in that department.

Hey Guys,

 

Looking for some help getting a new pair of cans for work. I currently have the M50s and while I love them, it's time for a change. I also have the Westone 3s as my portable and I love their sound signature. I am looking for a closed back headphone since ill be wearing these at work and don't want to disturb people and would also like good isolation so people cant disturb me. I am looking to spend around $300. I listen to a bunch of different kinds of music: Phish (a lot of this and other jam bands), Black Keys, A Tribe Called Quest, Cake, The Doors, and Pink Floyd just to name a few. I'm looking for these to be comfortable as I could be wearing them 4+ hours a day (I am a software engineer so I literally sit in front of a computer, listen to music, and code for hours).

 

Would love any push in the right direction. Thanks!

Maybe the time is ripe to add an open back headphone to your repertoire. Have you read up on Grados yet?

In between HD600/HD650. The mid-bass is between the two, but the treble/upper-mids is more like the HD600.

Lol I keep running into you today. Just saw your post on the W4 hater thread by Katun.

Ok cool that's what I was thinking. The HD5x8 level is about as high as I've had the opportunity to listen to any senny's. Tks a lot.

I had the Grado S60s for 4 years during college. I absolutely loved them but open cans leak so much sound theres no way open cans would fly at work :(

W4 owners have a instinctive reflex around other nearby W4 ownersph34r.gif. But seriously, this actually happens a lot with other W4 owners. We all tend to have the same tastes and lurk the same threads, lol. I can see how Katun would like the W2s more than the W4s, though.

 

The HD5x8s have slightly sweeter treble and more upper midrange, so a little bit different from the Westones.

Shure940 has great detail and would be easy to drive off of a portable amp as it only needs the power to bring out the bass a bit, not because it won't have enough volume. Very neutral bass and mids with som e sparkle in the treble that really brings out all of the detail in whatever you are listening to.

 

DT990 is bass heavy and probably not what you want. The DT880 is the neutral Beyer in that price range. It is semi-open though, so it does leak quite a bit of sound.

 

Either the Shure 940 or Beyer DT880 would be great. Shure is probably more portable as it comes with a slightly less bulky case, but the Beyer is more comfortable.

Hello PurpleAngel,

 

I will either be using my laptop or Sony mp3 player(which is a little old so I'm pretty sure I need an amp for it). I can get that O2 aswell, however I always thought it was a desktop amp. So are you saying I won't miss much without an amp for the Shure 940?

Hello Msheney,

 

The store that I was able to test headphones from only carried 600 ohm version, I'm not sure if that changes anything. I will go check them out again and maybe ask for the best amp they can recommend for me.
