Well...owning the PRO 900 i know what i don't like in a headphone...

 

Can you recommend me something that has great sub-bass, almost comparable mid-bass, is comfortable, and does not have grainy piercing treble?

 

Listening to mostly EDM out of an FiiO E10, $300-$400 price range

 

Denon AH-D2000
HiFi Man HE-400 (New driver revision has grainy piercing treble apparently)
M-Audio Q40
Beyerdynamic DT 990 (32ohm or 250ohm?)

Beyerdynamic DT 880 (32ohm or 250ohm?)

 

Anything else to add to that list?

 

With the E10 should i consider 32ohm or can the E10 handle a 250ohm headphone?

Why yes--I own the SR 80i, 125i, 225i, 325is and RS2i plus the MS1i & 2i in the greater Grado family alone.  Since you raised the issue--which ones do you own?

Hello everyone, this is my first post, I was wandering around reading reviews and comments but they was not enough for me to decide on what to get. What I am looking for is a sound closer to live performance to whatever extent possible, and I mostly listen soul/jazz/funk.

My budget is 100-150 dollars, however I live in turkey and prices here are:

HD439 - $130

HD518 - $165

HD558 - $225

ATH-T500 - $130

ATH-910 PRO - $190

AKG K514 - $120

Shure 440 - $150

Maudio Q40 - $230

Beyerdynamic Dtx 910 - $120

Sony MDRV55 - $120

 

what is your recommendation of price/performance, or based on your experience which headphones I should rule out? TY

The HD 518 is a very nice can, if you can stretch your budget just a bit.  I can only guess at prices in Turkey, but I will mention some cans that are good for your genres--especially if you can't spring for the Senn.  You will then have to price them in your market and check to see if you have the equipment to drive them.

KRK KNS 8400

AKG K 240 Studio (or MK II)

Audio Technica ATH-AD700 [easy to drive]

Creative Aurvana Live

Koss ProDJ100 (for those on a budget here in the U.S.)

Yes I've owned the sr225i, and heard everything from the sr range except the 325i.
The majority of those are not 200$ new...You might as well include a tenth hand hd800 while you're at it.

I have only heard the HE-500, which one of my favorite cans.  I have read from more than one reviewer than the HE-400, while quite good, is a bit dark.  If true you won't be getting the highs that you seek.

 

So you think I'd be better with the 880 than with the 990, why is that? I was looking for an open pair and I think the 880 is semi-open, which might do.

The 990 was one of the chices I was leaninig to, that's why I ask.

Hi all, need some suggestions. I like acoustic, grunge, general rock, and some hip-hop. My most listened to artists are Bob Dylan, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, White Stripes, Pink Floyd, Neil Young. I tried AT M40s and could not stand how sharp and exaggerated the highs were, so I returned them and picked up some Beyerdynamics DT770s. Comfort is also a huge issue here. I have a big head and classes. The Beyers are kind of the benchmark now. The ATs weren't horrible, but certainly not nearly as comfortable as the Beyers. Anything else I get needs to be comfortable. 

 

I am currently trying the Beyer DT770s, which I like. All of my digital stuff is 320k minimum but mostly Apple Lossless. I run my digital files from my Macbook or iPod classic unamped. I listen to vinyl through my amp. I certainly notice the difference between the Beyers amped and unamped, but they are still very nice driven by the onboard soundcard or iPod.

 

I will eventually purchase a dedicated portable amp, but its not in my budget for a while. I maxed out my headphone budget at $180 including tax for the Beyers. I prefer to buy in-store, as buying online and returning if I don't like them is a total pain. I hate to buy before I try. Here are my options:

 

Beyer DT770s - $180 (already purchased, I could just keep these)

AKG K240 - $99

Senn 5xx maybe? - <$180

Beats by Dre - $199 (kidding)

 

Let me know what you guys and gals think! If you see something that isn't on my list, let me know!

As I stated at the beginning of my post, I bought each of the cans listed (except for the HD 580) new for $200 or less--U.S--all within the last year and few months.  Almost all of them can be found in that price range today with a little shopping.  For cans that have not been discontinued, the only possible exceptions are the Senn HD 598, which I bought before Senn imposed its MAP earlier this year.and the Sony MDR MA-900, which I caught on sale at Amazon this summer.

 

Here's the current listing for the HD 558 at the post MAP prices of $170 to $180:

The 880 is former Beyer flagship an audiophile tier can on par with the HD 600 & 650.  It provides excellent bass (and mids & treble).  It is not colored to add extra bass like the 990 (or 770).

The closed DT 770 has a "V" shaped EQ and is very bass heavy.  It's a (very comfortable) basshead lite can to my ears.  The Senns and AKG are open or semi-open and are much more neutral.  The Senns are my personal favorites from your list.  However, you will have to decide which sound signature you prefer.
