Get the Pannasonic HTF600 if you want some bass, else get the Monoprice 8323 and then get this if you want some added comfort on the headband.

both of these are compatible with the Beyer DT250 velour pads too.

HE400 v. Q701?

 Will be used for music and movies. Have partially modded D2000, love them, but looking for something with a great soundstage and more open sounding. Currently have the E17, going to be picking up a Little Dot (mkIII or 1+).or a Valhalla. Essentially looking for something different than the D2000's. Thoughts?

Would love a bit of advice on deciding which cans to buy. Currently own ATH AD700's(first proper headphones ive ever owned) running through an Asus Xonar DG, use it for gaming movies and music (Dubstep, trance but also death metal, rap and hip hop). Love the clarity and sound stage of these headphones but feel they are lacking in the bass department even after EQ.

Need another pair to complement using the AD700s with ALOT more bass. Tossing up between the M-50 and Hfi 580 at the moment, any other suggestions or ideas on this one?

People are volunteering their time to give recommendations. Sometimes that means helping people when we should be working (as is usually my case). I'm not sure what part of this scenario doesn't make sense to you as its all pretty simple. No one will help you when you have that attitude.

Post to the IEM recommendation thread and then continue your own research and check back every once in a while to see if you were lucky enough to get an answer. And don't waste our time with complaints.

Both are good cans.  Based on experience with the HE-500, the Q701 will give you both a bigger sound stage and a more open sound.

Hello, I am looking for a pair of headphones that will mainly (95%+) be used for Movies/TV. I will be watching these from my laptop and don't want to have to buy an amp as well, price range is up to $150 CAD

A person sitting next to you can definitely hear what you're listening to when you're using fully open headphones. Whether or not it bugs them... well it depends on the person I guess. :) While the volume that they hear sitting next to you is typically very quiet, they can usually tell what music you are listening to.

People that are new to the audiophile world almost always want closed headphones. I think this is probably partly based on the fact that most consumer headphones that people are familiar with are closed and partly based on most beginner audiophiles being interested in headphones for portable use where outside noise can be an issue and they don't want to be bothering the people around them (i.e. on trains, at school, etc).

Experienced audiophiles on the other hand typically prefer open headphones. There's a reason for open headphones and its not so that your wife can hear what you're listening to nor is it so that you can hear your kids screaming through your music. :) Its because of the acoustic benefits. Open headphones don't have the resonance and distortion problems inherent in closed designs. They also provide a more open, spacious, speaker-like presentation with a wider soundstage.

So to sum it up, open headphones are superior acoustically and closed headphones are for when sound isolation is needed. Edit: I should also point out, closed headphones inherently have more bass impact so bassheads are advised to look for closed cans.

I agree with the major points made by devhen.  I will add that amount of leakage varies.  Semi-open tend to leak less than open.  Among open cans the Grados and many Senns leak a great deal but the Sony MDR-MA900 leaks very little.

While not as true at Head-Fi, the new(-ish) mainstream headphone market is all about bass.  As a rule, closed cans do that better and cheaper than open cans.  However, when you look at the top of the audiophile field (excluding electrostats) you are looking at almost exclusively open cans.

What's the volume?

I have Beyer DT990's at work. I've asked around and found that nobody hears the music but me. That's probably because I virtually always keep the volume low. That's my preference.

My former cubemate attached them to her computer and cranked up the volume. Everyone in the area could hear the music and it was annoying.
