I need help deciding on small headphones for road trips

I nailed it down to the Sennheiser HD238 and the AKG K450.

I'm leaning towards the HD238 but I would like to know how the bass is on both headphones.

I am a basshead, but I'm not expecting these to be basshead phones. I do hope one of these can at least give me decent to okay bass

Any advice is appreciated

I haven't heard either of the IEMs you listed. What do you like about each one? Do you need them to be closed/open for isolation reasons? Do they need to have portability? Are you willing to purchase an amp? If you can answer these it might give a better idea of what headphones might work for.

The GR-07 is very crisp and clear, but not fatiguing with continued use. What it lacks in bass I am able to accomodate for using the E17. The EPH-100 has a nice, wide soundstage with more depth. I switch back and forth between both quite frequently. 

I am actually able to increase my budget more now, into the $400 range. As I said my taste is all over the board. I can listen to classical music, an instrumental piece from a soundtrack, techno, Metallica, Bon Jovi or something harder like Skillet or Seether. I dont need to be sitting front stage when listening to music, but I do prefer depth, crisp vocals, tight mid-bass and little to no sibilance.  

I prefer over the ear and comfort is important. I prefer closed for isolation so I dont bug the wife too much. I am hoping to go with something that can be driven by the E17 for the time being, but a new amp down the road will be a possibility.

I originally started out looking at the M50's due to the hype, but started looking elsewhere as I read more and more threads. I have found a good price on the Ultrasone Pro 900's within my budget and was looking into them. 

I personally enjoy the Shure SRH940 which are very detailed and have a tilt towards the bright side, yet I did not find them fatiguing. They have a decent soundstage for a closed cna and the ear pads are quite comfortable as they are velour. The headband however, is a bit uncomfortable for extended use, so unless you come up with a solution for that it might be a deal breaker.

I don't think the M50s would be a good choice because you will likely miss some of the music that you are used to hearing due to the recessed mids and the narrow soundstage. The Pro 900s are known to be kings of EDM, but I don't know how well they perform other genres compared to other similarly priced headphones. Many people also find their highs a bit sibilant, so I don't know how much of an issue that will be.

I don't have experience with other closed headphones that might fit your preferences, but if you want to try open/semi-open, the AKG Q701 and Beyerdynamic DT880 would also fit your needs.

Hopefully someone else can chime in with some other closed recommendations, especially with the budget increased to $400

I'm looking for a new pair of headphones in the $300 range. Coming from the HD25, I want something with better extension into the lower frequencies, a larger soundstage, and slightly less treble emphasis (not after a dark-sounding headphone, though, just a little bit less peakiness). Right now I'm looking at the K550 and the HE-300. I'll be using them with my Matrix Mini-i so they'll need to be relatively easy to drive. No preference as to open or closed as I'll only be using them at home. What do you guys think?

I had the MTPCs but lost them, so I want to get a new IEM for outside wear. I have the MTPGs, which are pretty good, not as good as the coppers were, but my dad "stole" them.

 

MTPCs were actually a little too bright for my taste, can someone recommend me some ~$200 IEMs with good mids, acceptable bass, and highs that aren't so bright?

The Pro 900 is very bassy.  The (also must be amped) Pro 750 is a better choice.  Both are very different from the AKG.

It seems as if alot of people are given advice, which is the main purpose of this thread.  Now, generally speaking, your reaction inclines people towards not being helpful, seeing that they are taking time out of their lives to try and be helpful.  And ultimately, you will be making the decision anyways.  We all hope you do find something you are pleased with and it brings you countless hours of enjoyment.

Hint hint - I know I'm still hoping to get a lil advice :p

I'm not sure that you'll find something that is an upgrade, but you will likely find something with a different sound signature. Grado is known to be good for rock as it has nice mid/s and highs, but can be lacking in lows. I do not know what the Aviator sounds like, but I'm assuming that is a warm sounding phone, maybe even a bit dark. If you want to try a basshead headphone you could pick up one by Ultrasone. You could get the DJ1/HFI-580 or if you want a slightly more balanced bass response there is the DJ1 Pro/Pro 550. These should be right in the range that you are looking at. If you don't think that you need a basshead type phone, you may want to save up for a nicer pair and ask for advice again at that time.
