Dont really think there is much good in that budget. Samson or the Superlux HD668B will be your only options realistically

Also I listen to mainly Trance, Techo, and Hip-hop. The only time Listen to music is at the gym with my phone.
I was looking at the Audio Technica ATH-M50 , someone also recommended the Sony MDR-XB500.
I'm looking to spend 50-150 dollar range
I have only heard the Sony MDR XB500: It has more bass than any other earphone I've heard, and smooth treble that doesn't extend terribly well. From reading and frequency response graphs, the M50 will not have the same levels of bass, but will have additional treble. The XB500 is like a \ shaped response with tons of bass, and less treble (not as extreme as the backslash though,) and the M50 is more ov a V shape, with extra bass and treble, (though not as much bass,) and a bit less midrange compared to the two ends of the spectrum.post #15453 of 288686/14/12 at 6:42am- stevenswall

I've read the Sportas have more bass because of the stronger clamping force... is this true, or an effect induced by slower decay? Or both?
Are the Sportas headbands plastic or metal?
I'd prefer the one with more prominent mids, softer bass and treble. But if the difference is almost unnoticeable by ear, I'd go for the Sportas for the price and design. To me the Sportas are more visually relaxing than the bold Portas.
+The measurements of the two at Headroom imply (to mine eyes) that the Sportas, in fact, have a tad less bass. Boy, is it hard to make a decision! haha"

I was recommended the PortaPro by a personal friend whom I don't think was on headfi. He was into music and video production, and had a relative who was an audiophile. He told me that if I wanted new headphones better than most others around $100, to get the PortaPro, and said make sure it's the one with the 'wings' on it. I take this to mean not the SportaPro, which from a review I read before purchasing the PortaPro, said that when the bass was heavy, there was some driver flutter, which may be due to the air not being able to escape from the plastic housing well enough with the closed design.
A closed design will also suffer from worse soundstage, so I would personally suggest the PortaPro. It's band is metal, the sound will not distort as much, sound stage is better, and personally, I think the look is much more professional as well.post #15454 of 288686/14/12 at 8:01am- macinmac

Hi - I am a proud owner of Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones, and I love them mainly because of the durability, fit, and versatility (both physically and audibly) of them. HOWEVER...
I am looking to upgrade from them now, I want something fresh, but a noticeable step up. The main points I need filled are:
- Durability. They need to be at least as strong as the semi-metal/plastic build of the M50's.
- Looks. It can't be ridicu-ugly, but it doesn't need to win awards either. Something that looks good/sleek is nice.
- Overall Versatility. I listen to my music anywhere from on the bus, to at home, to in a library - good noise blocking and sound leakage is a must.

The LCD-2 is $1,000 can. Feel free to continue your quest, but I know of no can below $600 (the HE-500) that might even be competitive with (much less superior to) the sound of the Audeze.

I'd say look into Ultrasone Pro 750 + Fiio e17. Obviously a good idea to read reviews and take a listen yourself before you make a decision, but they seem like a viable option
post #15462 of 288686/14/12 at 5:31pmI've got a friend that tends to listen to Trance, Dubstep and occasionally watch movies and play some web games as well as chat on Skype.
His music tends to be in the 96 - 128 bit range so that he can fit more on his iPod so I didn't want to him something too revealing.
My first instinct was to suggest him the new AiAiAi TMA-1 since it's readily avaiible everywhere. Then I though about the veil, the recessed mids and the chopped off treble and thought it would be too expensive for what it was. Plus, no headset.
Maybe the new Hesh 2.0? It's hip with the kids, cheap and has a built-in mic along with a lifetime warranty.
Ideally, I would forego the headset and give him either the Ultrasone HFI-580 or HFI-780. It would give him the high notes that his trance has and have some durability.
I rejected the Denon D2000 - too brittle and way too big for his uses. I thought maybe the Denon HP700 might be good but I haven't heard it.
If any of you were in my shoes, what would you recommend? I'm personally leaning towards the Hesh 2.0 or the Ultrasone HFI-580 but I'd like some more input on this matter.

Hello, I'm back again. If you don't remember, I said a week ago that I was set on some ms-2s. I still haven't had the chance to order them (financial reasons) and in the meantime, I've been on this forum all too often. If im able to get a pair of rs-2s (used) for about the price of the ms-2s, should I go for it? I listen to a wide variety of rock (pink floyd, radiohead, linkin park, metallica, nirvana, dragonforce, opeth [their lighter albums mainly], foo fighters, green day, phoenix, etc.). TBH, my main reason for leaning toward the rs-2s is the wood, which is supposedly lighter (i.e. More comfortable), and IMO, much better looking, but that's just being childish. How do they differ sonically?

How do they differ sonically? The RS2i (unless you're getting an older version) is superior in every way except for slam of the music. The 2 has greater frequency response, far better sound stage and improved clarity. They have a very natural sound signature. They are also very light in comparison to the MS-2.
post #15465 of 288686/14/12 at 11:20pmNot a bass head. Need it to be closed, accurate, and balanced across frequencies. Except bass, as I doubt I would be mad about a lack of bass. Most headphones I have heard all have enough for me. Also a bass heavy set would be bad for spoken voice which makes up a decent amount of my listening. I was looking at the Shure SRH440, denon ah-d1100 etc so price is flexible but lower $$$ with better value is better obviously. Don't see myself spending over 250 though so suggestions above that price might not be so helpful. Currently own Ultimate Ears 700 and an old worn out pair of Senn 201's that will be replaced with this new set. I REALLY hate sibilance on sss sounds. Pet Peeve.
