I have never found the 598's sound fatiguing or piercing, so I've never really wish for it to be slightly darker.

And yeah, it's great for movies because of its massive soundstage (without having too little bass).

Actually, I think HD558's are slightly darker than HD650's. I have both, and I could swear that HD650 have a noticeably brighter treble. Mids are about the same, with HD558's having maybe a bit more upper mids, and HD650's have a lot more bass, but they're definitely not dark sounding or slow sounding, and thats even when plugged directly into asus xonar d2x soundcard.

HD598's are not much different than modded HD558's apart from having a slightly tighter bass and brighter treble, but its really a small difference.  All opened sennheisers that i've tried (555, 558, 595,598, 600, 650) have a very similar signature,  none of them are bright, but they're definitely not veiled or dark as some people claim. Its just that majority of other headphones are WAY too bright.

Hello,

I'm looking for a closed set of full size cans to wear about. I'll be using it at home connected to my NAD3020, or possibly portably directly connected to my iPod classic, although I might get a portable amp/dac (D-zero?) sometime in the future.

I like punchy, quick bass and detailed (possibly forward) mids. I've looked at the DT770, K271 and M50, but can't decide between them. Does anyone have any other opinions or suggestions?

Thanks.

Thank you!

If you're dropping that much money, is it a big deal to upgrade the dac? There are plenty of good options in the sub $200 range.

Do you think you could maybe be satisfied for... let's say a week before moving on? cool.gif

I'm still surprised you haven't gone the way of ortho madness to start tuning things to exactly how you want to hear them.

The DT770 and M50 do not have forward mids; quite the opposite in fact. Perhaps the Ultrasone HFi780?

anhtu1990, not sure what I said before.

Hopefully I said the HD-558 and HD-598 use the same "driver", not that the HD-558 and HD-598 are exactly the same.

The HD-558 and HD-598 have different grills styles.

I know the HD-558 has a black rubber tape covering about one third it's grill, that the HD-598 does not have.

Well, i was thinking of using my predator as a stand by dac till i get a new dac. Could someone please advise on a good dac in the under 500 range? I was thinking of using my source as an ipod and/or my computer, because my library is predominantly digital, and i down own many cd's.

Thank you

Well you can take the Grados and HD 555's off of your list since they are open-back headphones, which leak a lot of sound.

What kind of music do you listen to?

40% Rock

25% Electro

10% Hip hop

Sony V6 or 7506 offer balanced sound, good isolation, and high durability. Also take a look at the Shure 440

No such thread for amps that I'm aware of. The choices aren't quite as staggering as headphones though, so even moderate reading/searching will reveal answers much more quickly.

Open headphones: AKG K420, Senn PX200-II/PX-100
Closed headphones: Senn HD 202-II/HD205-II, Senn HD215, Pioneer MJ31, Sony ZX100/300, Sony MDR XD100/200
I just want something that is comfortable/can be worn for long periods and sounds good. I'm think I'm leaning towards the K420 or HD215 maybe. I hope you guys can give me a little bit of direction.

I can wear my Senn PX100-ii all day.

What's the leakage like? Does it give much isolation in public/loud environments?
