What might you suggest? I've always heard a lot about the ath-50m and might pick up a pair of Shures

My Preferrenced used for headphones:

Hardcore Gamer(FPS,RPG,Action,Adventure singleplayers) I love being immersed in games by sound so sound/directive/positional sound (& gun-fire/explosions should be felt/shake)as well as music in gaming are of Utmost imp.  (Infact I ambuying a new headsets for gaming only & was going for a 5.1headsets but heard frm this site that there are other headsets that provides better quality than 5.1 gaming headsets both in terms of sound/music quality as well as direction and positional sound)

I dont have much knowledge of being an audiophile and technical terms but I want to listen Music-all Genres(another imp. preference) and watch movies in highest quality possbile HD-audio etc. So would like to have an all-round headphones which could blow mind in gaming through 5.1 sound and also in music and movies.

Another thing, Are headphones better than speakers and can they provide that bass/impact of guns bombs/missiles exploding in games movies so that you can feel.

My budget is around 100-200$

And how good are these sony's xd100 headphones I am using compared to which u all are going to tell .

Having bass and positional audio are typically at odds with each other, especially in headphones. My suggestion: get something like the Audio Technica AD700 for gaming, then invest the rest into a speaker/sub setup for movies.

Headphones will never be able to reproduce that same body shaking bass that big rig speakers and subs will get you. You can get some decent head thumping out of headphones, but if you're cranking up the music loud enough through headphones that you can feel your lungs reveberate, you're doing something wrong.

The Senn HD25-1-ii is a very solid headphone. Good bass, lightweight and portable, rugged construction.

I preferred the sound of the Shure 840 over the M50. Reportedly, the 940 is a step up for detailing and comfort, but trims down a bit of bass compared to the 840.

You've just described the HFI-680/780 to the letter, seriously, they crunch as hard as Grados, they have that 5K bump in the presence range and you even have a choice of how recessed you want your midrange. They still get sibilant though.

The Denon DN-HP700 might be close too.

Are you sure they have recessed vocals because in ABi review,

http://anythingbutipod.com/2008/04/ultrasone-hfi-780-review/ they say that the midrange is really foward. The Denon too,

http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/541654/denon-dn-hp700-review-and-comparison-to-the-ah-d7000. Thanx for your help by the way, according to the reviews I'm edging towards the HFI 780.smily_headphones1.gif

Yeah I'm sure. The 680's midrange isn't as recessed as my portapros, but it's definitely recessed a bit compared to the Shures.

Dave Rat has actually measured it, and it's exactly what I'm hearing. I used my crazy MS paint skills to fill the blanks, and you can see the presence bump:

btw look how incredibly similar the 780 is to the portapro, it's surprising:

Nice MS Paint skills, hahahaha. What's the red arrow pointing at on the Ultrasone 680 photo?

The presence boost, looks like it's around 5k maybe?

How much of a difference does the portapro Kramer mod do? I've done the quarter mod but more treble would be nice for sure.

Hello audiophiles, I need advice.

I'm a budding audiophile with not much money to start.

My current pair of headphones are the Sony MDR-V6.

I only use headphones for everything, gaming, music, portable. I don't even have speakers.

Okay, so I really like the V6's they really blow away everything I have ever listened to before.

Problem is they are not good enough for me anymore. I like bassy music, but not muddy like the V6's are, but at the same time crisp highs with out killing my ears like the V6's can do.

I like to listen to music loud, and I have my phones plugged into a Sony STR-DE595 receiver which is getting it's signal from my XS-71 sound card that I have equalized cause it's not that great.

The V6's are really good at doing one thing once, if it's just highs it sounds amazing, mids, sound good and bassy parts alone like explosions in games or music sounds great, but when they all come together what happens is the bass overwhelms the highs and mids while at the same time sounding really muddy and crappy.

Now here is my delima. I have $169 that's it. For me the V6's are really good until bass and gaming comes into play. I game a lot and these have no sound stage.

When I am playing Bad Company 2 I often get knifed from behind cause I cant hear them sneaking up on me. I hear that the ATH-AD700 are great for gaming with the incredible sound stage, but are really lacking on the bass which wont do for me. I have been looking at the ATH-M50's and the DT-770 PRO 80om for my bass loving music and boom boom movies like Transformers. I fear that if I get one it will only be good for one of the things I need new phones for. For under $170 what would be my best option for gaming sound stage, with non muddy, but pronounced bass? Thank you very much for your advice!

Also, sorry for my not so well written plea, i'm tired haha.

I dont want to be a pain in the arse but you could read or use the search? This goes for everyone though.

Of all questions cans for heavy metal is the most common and there is a one every week it seems, at least for the last 6 months orso. There are numerous of threads about it on the first 3 pages of the forum and this thread is also littered with them.

Do some research and you could at least have gotten a list with the obvious choices.

/rant mode off.
