Yeah, I think I'm probably gonna go with the HD600 having read a few more comparisons.

I'm after an open, circum-aural headphone for use with Jazz and Classical. I'm going to be amping from a Fiio e09k, but my little dot 1+ is also an option. Budget of about $250.

I'm not familiar with the amps you mentioned.

There are number of desktop amps that will drive the HE-500.  I'm sure you can find at least one thread here (including the other forum sections) about which ones are best when paired with the HE-500.  I can tell you that the Schiit Asgard (solid state) and HiFiMan EF5 (hybrid) do the job.

Not sure about the amping issue, but the best cans I know of for your uses are the AKG Q701 or Beyer DT 880 Pro (250 Ohm version)--both based on U.S. street prices.

If closed, the Shure SRH 940.

Hi guys, I need help in choosing a headphone. I'm thinking of Sennheiser HD558, Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO and Audio Technica AD700. I've got the chance to try AD700 and DT990. I like the soundstage of AD700 but find the sound abit piercing to my ears. For DT990 I'm not sure is it because I tried it without amp and it doesn't sound good to me.

I can find one DT990 Pro and HD558 at the same price and AD700 is just slightly cheaper. I will only be using them at home and if there's a need I will get a amp as well. But at this stage can anyone help giving suggestion on which headphone is more suitable? I'll be listening to Jazz songs but not rock metal songs.

The HD 558 is your best choice for jazz--and it's not a close contest.  Depending on your system, it may not need an amp.

What I need is a <200$ large-head fitting & big comfortable cushion, bass capable headphone that would compliment my neutral Q701 well.

* DT770 is my top contender so far but my main concern is their treble.

* Also saw Beyer Custom One Pro but unsure what they're all about but they seem to meet price and criteria.

* Another option I've considered is getting Fostex T50RP's and modding them for better sound and more comfort, but I'm not huge into DIY and am afraid of screwing things up.

Any other suggestions or advice? Thank you in advance.

Hello folks

I am about to buy open or semi open headphone for orchestra and opera music, (now I own Audio-Technica Ath m30) I am considering AKG K240 studio and AD700... I just need more suggestions around 100-120 $ price range (this price includes amp if it would be necessary)

Please please give me more ideas

Thank you

The AD700 is not a bad choice.  However, for open I would go with the Senn HD 518 (within < $10 of the top of your budget) or the KRK KNS 8400 for closed.

Hi,

I would like some opinions regarding the ZX700 as well as the SRH840.

I can get these phones at pretty much the exact same price. I was wondering which would be the better buy.

Important factors for me in order of importance would be:

1) Sound (I dislike treble peaks. I really like the sound of my HD650)

2) Comfort

3) No leakage / Isolation ( library environment)

4) Durability ( will throw these in my backpack. SRH840 is foldable but the little wires going from the cups scares me)

I can get both of these at around 100 canadian $. These would be study headphones used in the library or gaming connected directly into the headphone out jack of an ipad/ipod/cpu. For 50$ more there is the Philips uptowns.

Thanks for any opinions!

Cheers

Hey everyone, (hope I put this in the right section.)

I purchased some Koss UR 20 headphones and was greatly disappointed in them: Hollow sounding, with absolutely NO bass. I returned them but only ended up with a few dollars back. So, looked at some more headphones and came across the Monoprice 8323/DJ style over ear pro headphones. Well actually, someone recommended them to me.  : ) After reading quite a few reviews, they sound like they are pretty good for such a cheap price. So, I think I am going to buy these headphones, but half of me is skeptical of buying them thinking I will be disappointed with them just like the Koss headphones.

Any experience on these Monoprice 8323 headphones? I wouldn't want to buy these and be disappointed again. But, there seems to be alot of good reviews on them. What do you think?

Wut,  AD700 is inferior to HD558 in pretty much every way, they're not headphones in same league. No, AD700 is not an improvement to HD558's. Its the other way around, without any doubt. HD558's will give you much fuller and more lush / smooth / refined sound, much better bass, more precise soundstage and imaging, etc. But it DOES need an amp to sound at its best. Its not really a 50 ohm headphones....since the spike around bass goes above 300 Ohms, so if you don't use a good source, they might feel weak and uncontrolled in bass department. An amp like Fiio E9, or even better the E17 would do wonders with it.

HD558x2

There shouldn´t be any problem using them without an amp.
