I am currently looking for a new set of headphones.  I listen to mostly hip-hop, rock, and rap.  I want something with great overall sound quality, but with great bass in particular.  I am looking at the audio technica ath-m50, ultrasone hfi 580/780, or the v-moda crossfade lp.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just got my set of m50's today. The mids seem a little sloppy bass is their for sure. That's about all I've come up with them so far from what I heard I exppected something a little more neuttral sounding but they are very excited if you ask me. Could of just been the music I guess smily_headphones1.gif was pretty aggressive music too. I just spent 2 hours using them to game on my gaming rig with the Fiio e7 as the sound transport and amp and let's say this I game with high end systems and other headphones but the highs are so clear I was snipping in the top of a building and heard a squad tiptoing through the building under me and took them all out because if these headphones so very clear very clean just a little sloppy in the lower mids I kinda felt it was a little funky and cluttered sounding but not in to bad of a way but that's not burned in perhaps they clear up as they break in

The mids are known to be recessed on the M50s, so I don't know how much they will change. The M50s are also an interesting choice for gaming as they are known to have a small soundstage. If you like them, that's great though because ultimately it only matters how you like them, not what someone else thinks.

Hi all,

I'll be building a valve amp soon based on the project sunrise ii and want some new closed cans to go with it.

Budget is ideally less than $200, but I can probably stretch to $300

I have currently been looking at Fostex t50rp with the mad dog, however they're a bit over budget. Whilst I enjoy diy, with amp building and tweaking, I won't have time to mod hps too.

I would therefore like advice on whether these phones are good for classic rock/punk pop/classical/prog metal and whether there are any cheaper comparable commercially done mods.

Cheers,

I'd say go with the E11 as it has the most power me thinks.  Was never crazy about the DT770/E7 combo.

Howdy Head-fi,

I'm looking to buy my first pair of nice cans and amp/dac for around $400 and I was hoping to get some advice.  I'm a little confused on how much I should be spending on the headphones and how much on the amp/dac.  I was looking at Senheiser HD 598 and Fiio e17 amp/dac.  Some background on my use:

-Music(Rock[Classic, Prog, Psychedelic, Post], folk, and blues) and gaming(FPS)

-Will be used mostly through my desktop I just built and sometimes through my ZuneHD so my amp/dac will need to be portable
-Circumaural and Open desired but closed not a dealbreaker

-Good sound stage

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm interested in getting the HD 598. I had a pair of ZX700s and was very pleased with them until they broke. I've been using Philips "The Snug" since then which are a very good headphone for the price. It's time to upgrade though.

The VModa Crossfades were on the amazon goldbox so I got a pair for 80 bucks. They are a disgusting mess of bass and I'm going to return them. Never in my life have I heard such sloppy bass. They're better than Beats, but that isn't saying much...... If it wasn't for the terrible bass these would be great headphones.

I've heard varying comments on the HD 598. I like thumping bass like the ZX700, but not gobs of it. Just enough to know it's there. Would you still recommend the 598 to me. What kind of amp should I be getting with these? Right now the source out of my laptop is a turtle beach usb dongle (my laptops headphone port is dead and this was a cheap replacement). The FiiO E10 looks alright, but it's usb powered like the turtle beach so I'm concerned about noise and output (the dongle actually does a good job at volume, but I've never had a pair from sennheiser before). I don't want to exceed 100 on the amp (it would negate buying the 598s and not something more expensive) and it'd be preferable if it had a DAC.

Would I better off with the ATH-M50s for 110 bucks or should I just get the ZX700 for 83 (or even the ZX1000). I've been out of touch from head-fi for a while so if anyone knows of new headphones please help. Thansk.

G'day everyone, i have been looking for a new set of headphones for a while now but everything i have read on the internet so far has still not given me a clear idea of what would be best for me. So far the best headphones i have owned were only a pair of skullcandy in ears that cost me about $50 so i don't have any real experience to go off.

I'm looking for a set of closed over ear headphones for around $100 (i could go a bit more if it was really worth the extra) and i will be using them with my laptop and ipod classic 120gb and my music files are only mp3's and the like so they must not be so good that they show the flaws in my source and content.

i listen to a lot of techno, trance, house (avicci, benny bennasi, calvin harris, daft punk, deadmau5, the potbelleez, the presets, swedish house mafia, tiesto) and the like also drum and bass (pendulum)  a little bit of dubstep also some more mainstream stuff (coldplay, red hot chilli peppers) and some other stuff like mvies and a little gaming.

they will mostly be used at home but i may take them to uni sometimes as well when i have big gaps in between my classes so preferably something that isn't impossibly bulky (a little is ok), looks ok and is isolating so i don't intrude on my housemates and other students at uni.

i will most likely end up wearing them for extended periods of time too so they will need to be comfy

thanks

You sound like you'd be a good match for the ATH-M50s. It's $110 on Amazon. I've never used it though, so check out some reviews. Since you need something portable, this thread is the best place to start http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/shootout-102-portable-headphones-reviewed-panasonic-rp-htf600-added-04-29-12

The HD598 is a couple levels above the ZX700 in sound quality.  I have tested the ZX700 against my HD595 and I found the 595 to have much better bass and extension.  Anyway, I think you would do good with the HD598/Fiio E10 combo.

I run my e7 off my computrrrs USB and they work great I've heard apsolutley no noise brilliant little device. Instantly docks. Works very well I'm using my m50 moniters and the e7 on my computer and am very happy. I've also ran my k550s which are a much higher end headphone than the m50 and it sounds great docked to a computer.

The E7 was my first amp/dac, and since then I have tried a couple others that are the next step up in price (~$150). The E7 really doesn't hold up well against slightly better amps/dacs. If you can afford a slightly better product it's surprising how much better something like the HRT Headstreamer is in comparison to the E7 for only $70 more.
