Thank you, imackler. That's not something I want to get into the hang of, but since I want to spend the most money I've ever spent on headphones and I'm having trouble deciding between different styles, it seems convenient to try out more than a pair before I commit to one.

Hey guys.

Quick question. My favorite genres of music are Rock, Heavy Metal, and Rap. After asking around, the two most suggested Headphones I get are the Ultrasone HFI-580 and the Q40s. Which pair would be better for kinds of genres? Or is there something else I should look into for the price range?

Thanks for any answers.

Any other recommendations besides the hd598

What else that can utilize the sound card to its full potential without the need of other external devices

Also should be semi open or open headphones

I am looking to buy a pair of headphones. After searching through Mad Lust Envy's headphone gamer guide, and this thread, I sort of have an idea of what I want, but need some suggestions. My budget is maximum $140 I would say, I don't really want to break out any more. I don't have a headphone amp or a soundcard yet and the general consensus seems to be that they are necessary. Comfort is important, several hours of use at a time. This will be my first non headset purchase, after reading that headsets are pretty bad from threads like this. I will be using the headphones for gaming fps, strategy games and rpgs. I also listen to rock/heavy metal music. Disturbed would probably be the best example band. From what I've read ad 700's are very good but may lack the bass I want from heavy music and games like battlefield 3. My brother has Razer Carcharias, but I'm guessing from what I've read they may be horrible compared to headphones, correct me if I'm wrong. I also heard other headphones mentioned and just forgot the names. So please mention anything you think would be my best bet for under $140 or if absolutely necessary to get the sound I want, I may save up for something more. Also if you could tell me how much better they will be then Carcharias that would be cool. I was going to go with Carcharias until I stumbled upon this thread. Thanks!

Edit:These are just for home use on the computer. There could be noise from other people in the room though, or from TV.

-Durability- I'd like some that won't break easily as my head is big. I won't be rough housing them or anything though. Won't be dropping them, if at all on carpet.

I already posted this in its own thread but thought I would also post here and let that thread die

Currently I have a set of Monster Turbine Pro Coppers but I am looking for a set of full size circumaural headphones for use around campus, on transit and in my dorm. I am thinking closed is probably the way to go because I dont want to constantly have noise bleeding in or be disturbing everyone around me with my music.

I currently listen to music on an ipod touch but am looking for another better quality mp3 player to use for better sound quality. I listen to literally all kinds of music going from great big sea to country to dubstep so I think the headphones need to be fairly balanced or even bass heavy as i love to have bass.
My budget is up to $600 if I need to go that high for headphones and a portable amp if it is required to drive them properly.

Thanks, and please bear with me as I am fairly new to the Hi-Fi headphone community!

HD598's are a solid choice. You'll be impressed for sure. You are going to be using these just around the house, correct? An open headphone won't be ideal if you are planning on being out and about. The reason for this is because they leak sound. You will get not get isolation from outside noise and the all the people within your immediate vicinity will be able to hear your music as clear as a bell.

Hi. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD555s I bought about two years ago. I've been using them on their own through my computer's onboard audio. Whilst the sound quality is great I feel it's about time for something better. I can't really describe what sort of sound I enjoy as these are the only proper headphones I've ever used and I listen to all kinds of music. However I do listen to a lot of ambient music and I love to just close my eyes and lose myself in the music. As these are going to be used at home they don't have to be portable and I don't have to worry about them sound. Any advice is much appreciated.

They're not ideal since they are kind of open, too, though less so than the HD598. You may want to look at closed headphones, like the D2000.

Senn HD 598 seems like a logical step up.

Not interested in CLOSED ones, need to be open since I need to know what is going on in the house as well

Moving this from my other thread. I didn't know this thread was here!

Hey all,

This might sound stupid but redface.gif , Im thinking of dumping my Ultrasone DJ1 Pro's for something i find a bit more aesthetically pleasing, like the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 or the Shure SRH-840. I've looked around at different headphones and haven't really seen a pair i'd be comfortable wearing in public, aside from these (purely preference).

Now from my understanding my DJ1 Pros are a step (or two?) up from the ATH-M50's and SRH-840's, my question is, will i hate the sound of the M50's or SRH-840's after using my DJ1 Pros? Is it going to be a dramatic change?

Let me know what yall think!

Thanks!

Sorry for the bump, but I need an answer soon. smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks in advance.

I'm not too sure about the q40s, but the recessed midrange of the 580 won't do justice to rock and metal where distorted guitars can dominate.
