With the HFI-780 pricing at $249, shipping internationally, risking custom tax...the total price will probably be way above my average-student budget. So, those most likely are not the right headphones for me, financial-wise, of course :)

I see. That's actually the same reason why I skipped out on getting Grados/Alessandros, and stuck with whatever my local retailers can offer (which, on a happy note, included a wide range of Sennheisers, AKGs, and... I think that's more or less it). International shipping is a pain, especially now that I'm looking to get a Schiit amp.

By the way, if it's alright with you, I'd like to recommend the same cans I suggested to another person a few posts ago, the AKG K550. They're a bit of a portable/home-use hybrid; while the cable ends in a 3.5mm plug, and the cans are sensitive with only a 32 ohm impedance, they're fairly large and weighty. The pads are foldable though, for easy transport and storage. You could also wear them around your neck, if you want to.

There's an excellent review over at InnerFidelity, which can do a much better job at justifying your buying these cans:

I see many praise the HD598's mids, but the price T.T

Plus, such a big headphone will definitely benefit from an amp right? I have none to speak of...

Would love to hear advice-
Want the best sound possible and to keep the headphones for decades.
Budget $7500 (amp and cans)

Thinking of the Stax SR-009 and Stax 007tII amp.

I listen mainly to movies (Bluray) via the Oppo 95 which I'll connect to the Stax using XLR balanced cables. Don't laugh... I love movies!
I also love classical and vocal and some jazz.

I guess my main Q is how does the 009 sound with less than ideal content and source and a decent amp?
(it's clear that with a $5K source and $5K amp the 009s are unrivaled, but I have an Oppo 95 and $7500, not $15K).

I also have a PS Audio P5 power regenerator which should "improve" the transformer performance of the Stax amp.

Thanks

Sennheiser HD 518 is a good all-arrounder, if you can stretch your budget an extra $10.

That looks great. Would I need to use my Fiio E11?

I don't have any of your equipment.  What I can tell you is that at 50 Ohms, the 518 is very efficient.

Hey i've realised that i am in great need of a dac

i tested some better sources and amps and it was a night and day difference with the 558's

looking for dac/amp under 200, the amp section doesnt however have to be that good since i have an old stereo reciever with huge amounts of power more (over 20% volume is extremely loud)plus the 558's arent that hard to drive

was looking at something like the e17

i also live in sweden so not all stuff will be as cheap here

thx :)

Hey guys,

Which amp do you think is better? The Fiio E11, the JDS Labs CmoyBB or the Electric Avenue PA2V2?

Thanks,

Think of it this way.

$50 verses $130.

I've not heard all three but check out this stellar comparison: http://www.head-fi.org/t/596482/the-sub-100-portable-amps-shootout-7-1-amps-compared

I'm sitting here listening to my Samson SR850 (with Velour ear pads) and Senn HD558 ($170), not a big difference in sound.

and the HD518 is a lower model then the HD558.

I'm using a Essence STX with three AD797BR op-amps
