So what I got from all this - Open headphones are better for music and gaming.. So Open ones will be then.

BTW, would you help me with this one. I own very ugly headphones which are utterly unknown im sure.. but cant find specs for them..

So they are Philips SHP2000 Black colored.. the thing im curious about is Are they open or closed?

If this is them, then they are closed. Open headphones have a grille on the back to let the sound out.

HELP! So, I got a pair of beats solo yesterday and boy was I disappointed, back to the store they go. After, staying up all night reading various reviews I've decided I really want a pair of sennheiser HD 598s. Though, I have a few concerns. I've looked everywhere for these answers, but have yet to find them.

How bad is the leakage with these, 1-10 scale? For example: if you’re sitting on economy class in an airplane and you’re playing music on an average level, not too high, will the person next to you be able to hear your music?  If so about how loudly would he be able to hear it?

I'll be listening to these mainly with my lenovo x1 and samsung galaxy nexus. How will they sound without an amp? How good will the base be? I know some people don't like the base quality will it sound pretty good with hip-hop?

You guys know Anywhere I can get a replacement cable, that ships to CA, or better cable that fits into the same jack, without having to modify the headphones. They don't sell shorter cables for theses do they, because I can't seem to find them anywhere

I'am planning to cut the cable so I can shorten it to about 1 meter. Though am having a hard time finding good plugs I can get shipped to CA within 2-3day, what do you guys recommend, I really like these, think they'd look sexy on the HD-598: http://www.ecrater.com/p/13259645/1pcs-pailiccs-plug-audio-cable

Also, I found them for about $167 from electronic-expo with a coupon, and will probably try and see if J&R will price match them, do you guys know anywhere I can get them cheaper

Do you guys recommend anything else. I really don't care about noise cancellation and I listen to just about everything music wise.

I'am pretty set on the HD-598s, but am just a little worried about listening to them in public and the length of the cable.

ps: these are my first high quality headphones

I once wanted the 598 very badly too. To answer your question, the leakage is very bad on all open headphones. A person sitting next to you on an airplane would be able to hear just about as loud as you are.  You will not be able to listen to them in public.

-Senn PX100s: no especial complaints for what it is; wish the high-end were more resolved though.

-Grado SR80s: With default bowls, remember it being nicely detailed and airy, but fatiguing and not very engaging.  Tape mod brought out the bass nicely but I was always hungry for a little bit more.

-ATH M50s: Hated, trebles piercing and sibilant, mids ghostly and bass boomy.  Sterile and soulless.

-Listen to a great deal of electronic, IDM, hiphop.  Some rock, some acoustic solo, some drone/ambient.  Little classical, no metal.

-I greatly value a 'feathery', articulated aspect to the high range.  Love high-def, granular(?) treble that can make the most out of crunchy, intricately layered electronic samples.

-Mids maybe not such a priority since little of my music features lead vocals... but not entirely sure about this.

-Love responsive bass, thump is good, boom not so much.

-Soundstage... not really sure.  All I know is that the M50s felt claustrophobic, and it would be nice to be able to employ these new phones for gaming and movies which I do quite a bit of.  So trying a wider soundstage for a change might be nice.

-Comfort would be nice.  Not a priority, though non-fatiguing sound would be.

-Looks unimportant, open/close unimportant.

-Some semblance of neutrality for some amateur sound production would be dandy, but far from essential.

Thanks! in advance.

Check out any of the Beyer DT series. DT770, DT880, DT990

Brainwavz HM5 + fiio e10

There are probably tons of others but I would check those out

That's great to hear; I'd been eyeing the DT880 for a little while already.  I've read at least a little about all three but could someone break down the big differences between them real fast for me?  I know the 880 is supposed to be the neutral, bass-lite, classical-friendly phone and I'm wondering how well it would do delivering mostly electronic material.

Are these recs for the 250-ohm versions?

Pom, Kerry, done some reading and I think I'm going to look at the Senn 598's and the Beyer 880's. Hopefully I can find a shop somewhere to try them both out. I've put my sound card specs below, do you think they'll be ok to drive the 880's? It says up to 600 ohms and I'm not going to be using them at full volume, so I assume it should be ok.

Back again with basically the same situation/conditions.

Good isolation.

Under $75.

Using a laptop for the majority of the time.

Listen to music and a bit of gaming.

I think it's the other way around... You can get the HM5s off Amazon i think...

EDIT: Nevermind that second part. However, I still think the HM5s will be easier to get your hands on if you're interested.

I think im not really 'FOR' leaking sound in and out.. but on the other hand I REAAAAAAAALLLLLY want this kind of soundstage and SQ and all these things built in the 598s.

I forget what shures we mentioned lol. If your getting the HD598, you can get the Shure SRH940 for around the same price ($200). They have a very good soundstage for closed headphones, slightly less than the 598's. They are very detailed though, so if you have bad recordings and/or mad mp3 files, you will hear it, and it will not be good. On the other hand if you have good recordings/files (preferably flac) you will be able to hear EVERYTHING. Overall I would say the srh940 is just as good, if not better than the hd598 (Just not as sexy)

Well, my ATH-AD700's broke and I'm looking for a new pair.

The sound was fine on these, but they really started hurting my ears after awhile, I assume it was my ear pressing up against inside the cups.

I'm looking for some headphones that I guess have deeper cups -- and pref. leather on the outside, but not needed.

I listen to all kinds of music -- classical, rock, metal, trance, electro, choral.. I also play video games and would be using them for this as well.

I'd like to not spend over 200$ on new headphones -- but if there is something just over I would consider it. They would be complimenting my crappy Xonar DG soundcard.

Basically, I'm looking for the following in my next set of headphones:

  • Deeper cups -- and pref. leather
  • Closed pref, however I would def. consider another set of open headphones.
  • Balanced sound for all kinds of music, or at least the ones I mentioned above
  • Fine for gaming
  • Ones with deeper bass, at least slightly, compared to the ATH-AD700.

Any suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks!

Not sure if this should be here or a separate thread but anyway:

Researching good choices for neutral, very detailed headphones for home use for listening mostly to Classical, Choral and Opera. Any decent performance in Rock and Metal is a plus but not essential. I'd like to stay under £200 if at all possible. Not buying immediately so there is some flexibility in budget but not a whole lot.

So far I've been recommended DT 880s and Shure 940s. Been reading over the site but I'm not finding much information on the genres I'm particularly interested in with these two compared. Are there other options I should be looking at?

Second question: how hard are the 600 Ohm 880s to drive? Could an E10 manage it until I got my hands on something better or would I want to sort out a better desktop amp first? Interested in satisfactory volume not maximising SQ here.

Hey guys I found the Shure SRH440 on amazon but they're sold by some place called "best seller 21" my question is if I get them and there is a problem will Shure honor the warranty or they have to necessarily be full filled by Amazon, you can check them out here I hope they're not knock offs

Thanks.
