How difficult can it be to implement such feature in simple DAPs?

Is it necessary to have a full OS for USB output or what?

There is really no such a thing called 'USB digital out' - at least not in the same sense as SPDIF type of digital out for the audio world. Standard like SPDIF sends pre-defined digitized audio signal (well, audio date stream) to an external decoder (i.e. DAC) to convert back to analog signal. USB however doesn't send audio specific data. It sends digital data and command in serial - any kind of digital data is fine, then there is another I/O chip on the other ends will figure out what to do with the data and command. These data can be stored into a SD card or it can be sent to a DAC depends on what command is sent.

So the problem is that USB is a much more complicated system compared to just audio data, and therefore you need to implement both the source as well as the receiver. When the two connected, the source need to tell the receiver what to do and set everything into the right path. In SPDIF, everything has been pre-defined so both ends already know what to do and need not communicate as much. That is why to use USB DAC, you need a much more complicated system, and often involved (but not always) an OS.

Can it be done on X3? Yes.

...But on the current budget without any other compromises? No.

I'm sensible with FiiO, I'm aware that it is no easy task to implement the ability to output digital audio through USB without a complex logic system... what I expressed wasn't meant to raise any expectation towards so, just satisfy my curiosity about the difficulty of doing so, thank you.

It seems to me that such feature would be very apprecciate by 'audiophiles' in a simple pure DAP, more than in a tablet or smartphone, I could be wrong...

The first manufacturer that achieves so with universal compability will do a lot of $$$$! Dreaming....

Anyway I look forward to this FiiO X3, I'm very pleased with my Clip+ but I'm curious to know what an upgrade could bring, sometime in the future...

It's definitely going to be something special. The only thing i wished it could do was dock into an E09K.  Owell We got an Fiio X5 for that right?darthsmile.gif

I'm very excited about this DAP, and I've decided not to purchase any DAP until the Fiio X3 is released (which takes a lot of self control from me, because I was seriously looking at other DAPs before heading about this).  There is just one feature request that I have.  A few other DAPs like the Sansa Clip Zip and the Cowon D3 (that I know) take an exceptionally long time to read an SD card and create a database of songs.  Since this DAP will support HD Music, I will most likely be carrying more than one SD card with me, using some sort of credit card sized SD card holder.  I would really like to minimize the time required to create a song database.  I imagine that most of this time is spent analyzing the Tag information of each song.

I am wondering if we can have an *optional* file that will have a database of all the song files and their tag information that the Fiio X3 can depend on to minimize the delay inherent in changing SD cards.  Perhaps we can try to figure out an open-source format, perhaps there already is one?  I would really appreciate this feature.

I don't know if the j3 and d3 are very different but my j3 is prety fast reading the Card. I guess <30 seconds for 16+16 GB.
So maybe the problem is somewhere else. Slow sd Card?

The D3 is famous for its super slow reading speed.

Warm, sweet and bassy? With a universal outlook on hp that can work with it well.

It uses some things similar to the E17 such as the op amp. But the E12 has changed the meaning of the "FiiO house sound".

I wonder if it's using a charge pump or configured like the E12. Some things matter as much or more than the parts used.

Gawd!!! That is one smexy lookin' player,... L3000.gif

What significance is this type of design suppose to have? Is it good or bad? You kinda make it sound like an alternator :P.

In theory there's no difference but charge pumps can sound a little dry and grainy. Doesn't mean every one will either and I expect it to be used here. They don't use it in the E12. It's basically a DC to AC to DC circuit to allow an opposite or greater rail voltage.

it maybe a stupid question, but anyone will like to help us proofread the English UI content for our X3 ? please go to the thread http://www.head-fi.org/t/648630/please-help-us-proofread-the-english-translation-for-the-x3-ui

Not. there are a power manage chip and some DC/DC and LDO chip
