It's not the end all be all of DAPs, but for $40 it's really a great DAP and it's dispensable. I can throw it all over the place and not have to worry about it dying, and if it does it's only $40. I, for one, am not willing to shell out $300+ for a more brittle HiFiMAN, ColorFly, or iBasso DAP even if it sounds much better than the Clip+/Clip Zip.

...and then there's this

Poor/inexistant damping, and possibly frequency response variations if the headphones' impedance varies with certain frequencies.

Sansa Clip+ (0.5Ω) with Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10:

iPod Classic (5.5Ω) with Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10:

Hifiman HM602 (11.4Ω) with Ultimate Ears Triple-Fi 10:

As for Rockbox, yes it's not perfect, but its customisation and sound options/twaks are really great compared to the operating systems it "replaces".

Does anyone know anything about the digital output on the X3?

Was any real thought put into it, or was it just added as an afterthought?  Specifically, did FiiO take any to reduce jitter?

I'm looking forward to the X3 primarily as a convenient portable FLAC player, but the idea of being able to connect it via coax to my DAC at home is very enticing.

Maybe feiao can give us some information?

It is SPDIF and it has been planned since the beginning of the original X3 project 2 years ago. Jitter shouldn't be an issue, given it has never been an issue on all the FiiO products so far.

That's good news, but haven't all of FiiO's previous products included only a digital INPUT?  Jitter is a much larger issue with a digital output.

No. Most had analog input as well.

There are FiiO products that have SPDIF output, The reason why coax output is chosen over Toslink on X3 is because it has better jitter performance, IIRC.

So I guess this means no USB digital output? frown.gif

How difficult can it be to implement such feature in simple DAPs?

Is it necessary to have a full OS for USB output or what?

Why in the world would you want that?

I guess some portable DACs only accept USB

I just can't wait to get my hands on this,...
