The X3 which shown in CES is just a working sample not a beta version. I am waiting for the feedback of the head-fi'er who used a $1300 IEM test our X3.

any hack is welcome but I am not sure whether someone can do that, because the firmware developer put the secret code in a an-ti forgery chip to protect the firmware. so

I think it will far more difficult to hack the firmware.

Sounds difficult to hack but the goal of rockbox is anyway to replace the official firmware. We'll know more when the player is out and the first pcb scans are available. We will know then what processor is used. I'd love to have rockbox on X3 but at the moment I'm not very positive that it will ever happen :-(

Don't be so sure. The Rockbox devs are pretty clever people.

I would probably get one either way. That is if the sq is on par or better than the j3

It better be better sounding than the J3 lol, it was my most regretted audio purchase, its sound is truly disappointing.

There are a lot of Cowon lovers that would disagree with you. As a former owner of a couple of Cowons, I have mixed feelings about them....but I expect that the X3 will be better.

I've had a few Cowon's over the years and I also have mixed feelings about the product. Sometime's it's a home run...other times...when it's "supposed" to be a home run...the unit outright sucked...like the Z2. I owned it for 72 hours before saying...screw it...this thing blows.

Half a year ago I was totally new to head-fi and audio and general so when I first went on headfi I thought the ranking system on the equipment lists were based on sound quality and I never bothered to go into the forums and saw that the j3 was ranked number one and blindly bought it...I know better now. I still have no idea what those rank numbers mean.

I've owned a few different Cowon players, I even have a D2+ and X7 ATM. They're good, but they're no longer the best sounding players around. And I DESPISE BBE!!! They truly are a mixed bag of good sq (not the best IMO), amazing battery life (exception being the Android models), and cheap crap outdated hardware & buggy as all heck software.

I'm expecting better w/the X3. They don't make ridiculous promises or statements about their devices ("Super Player",...yeah right,...), and they care enough to try & work with us and deliver the best device they can for a REASONABLE price.

FiiO, you guys get my respect for being true to yourselves AND the customers. cool.gif

This player has some pretty high expectations to meet from what I see around, many people are counting on this, to be "the final DAP" then it better measure flat or it will be subjected to endless debates. I like FiiO's work, I think they're great and mean no harm or offence but their products are usually focused at entry to low mid tier level , I know the E11 is a decent sounding amp, but I know an amp for just $30 more than leaves it behind, I have the E10 and know a DAC/amp that leaves it behind for a little more.

It's very hard to word this without looking I'm trying to cause a stir, which I am not, I just need to hear this player before I can make further judgement. I have no doubt it's going to have every feature we want which is so awesome of FiiO for contributing with us to, but if it's just the sound of an E17 that plays music it won't be enough for me personally.

Please don't quote this post if you want to play "tit for tat" because I won't respond.

Did you sell your CK4 and bought the HM601 instead? (so you could not live with bass-roll of?)
