PC Music Server construction help - parts selection

I would like to assemble an PC based music server.  I started with the recipe posted on the Genesis audio website thinking that would be a good foundation.  The suggested parts, however, are a bit dated and I am looking for advice on updating a few of them.

Motherboard - Intel DG43GT - this board is available but i suspect there may be a newer offering that might perform better.  The intel supports DDR2 800 ram and I wonder if DDR 3 memory would be preferred.

In addition, I was initially thinking of using USB out of the server into a Hiface converter to run a coax spdif cable into my EE Minimax DAC.  Has anyone tried using a motherboard with a coax spdif header and rigging up a diy cable from the header to a good quality rca female attached to the back plate of the pc?  Would this underperform or outperfom the hiface (jkeny mod)?

I would appreciate any ideas you might have.

Thanks
