Confused about HD590 and digital out...

I've been doing research and I'm confused about a couple of things. When reading about the Sennheiser HD590, it states on the box "For digital" What does this mean?

On my sound card (audigy) I have a digital out, so is the HD590 meant to be plugged here then? I understood digital out to be used specifically for digital speakers and speakers with 5.1 support, not headphones. I tried connecting a pair of headphones to the digital out for experimenting, and the resulting static almost blew my ears off.

Just want to ensure I'm not missing something by not utilizing the digital out feature of the sound card.

it's just a gimmick they had like in the early 90's when digital media started to really take over the industry. It's basing that on the supposition digital is better, and people gotta gotta have digital ; ) (CD's)

Nothing to do with coaxial. or toslink. Still good old analog sound waves through and through.
