is there any software that will let me take a copy of a dvd i own and rip it straight to my harddrive?

DVD Decrypter

There are others but this one works very well. (and its freeware)

That site also has other very useful information to to other things with your movie after you ripped it.

well i got the dvd decryter and i got a movie but the file was just left with a whole bunch of files... what do i do to get the movie to play do i need another prog

A DVD movie is actually just a bunch of files.

You need a DVD player program like PowerDVD or WinDVD.

Like Ian said, "ripping" a DVD will leave you with lots of individual files. Most DVD players will allow you to select the main file and play it, automatically using the other files as needed.

You can convert the vod files into a mpeg file but this takes time.
(lots and lots of time.)

That site where you got the ripper should have a guide to do this if you want to go this route.
