I can imagine how an amp can make the cans shine. but I can also imagine that if the source has a decent internal amp, then an external amp is a waste of money and space.

I see. I dont know much of the power of the amp within nano but usually it isnt mentioned when people talk about powerful players(as in a powerful internal amp). So yes, then an amp might be worthwhile. perhaps cmoy BB http://www.jdslabs.com/testimonials.php or  PA2V2
