It has been ages since I've posted here, but it's good to be back. I was wondering if anyone had a recomendation for a DIY desktop amp kit for around ~$200. Tube, solid state, or hybrid, doesn't matter. Thanks for the input.

Which headphones are you looking to use with the amp?

Looks like he has grados according to his sig:

Tube - Soha II

Solid State : CKIII

Both will give you a single ended sound that is not found in this price range commercially,  unique great sounding all round amplifiers.  I think of the CKIII as a budget DIY luxman,  similiar design philosophy.

And the SohaII is the one of the best public domain hybrids  for Grados period  (MHO),  it is similar to the Melos which your Grado's were designed around.  Being that Mr Grados used a hydrid when designing the phones it just makes sense to power them with a hybrid.  Make sure you get Mullard 12AU7's or if you can find them Amperex 8416.   Its a very easy build,  use the recommended hammond case with a perforated metal top. http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=1003&step=2&top_cat=60
