Your ears are just used to the treble peak and flat signature of the gr07... that is why the 4R is sounding too boomy and bloated for you. Stay away from the foam tips because as with any IEM, foam tips give it a warm sound. The 4r is already warm enough so I suggest using the star tips that fit... listen to them for a few days... then go back to the gr07. You must let your ears adjust to its sound signature to really determine which is superior.
I've had both the gr07 and 4r, and the 4r is technically superior. But as with every headphone in this hobby, sound signature preference does not determine which headphone is better. It only determines which you prefer...
I think this is good advice. I presently own the UM3X and I just received my W4R and had a few hours of listen. I found the star tips were the best for my UM3X(the largest you can tolerate) . I began to listen, same star tips, and was kinda disappointed then I started noticing nuances and broader sound. I reminded myself my brain needs time with these so I am looking forward to the upcoming listening days. I at first thought there wasn't much difference between the two...but after a couple of hours things were changing. I do understand why others say these shine with amplification, I do not presently have an amp but my S3 as well as my Sansa zip were maxed and these things weren't struggling in the least. The treble is clear the bass is controlled and not boomy with silicon tips, yes I tried shure olives, comply and all of the included but went back to star tips. Different strokes for different folks. I have also found to continue switching between your old iem's and the new ones you are trying is counter productive. You need to pretend as if the new ones are the only ones for awhile, give yourself a chance to adjust.post #4773 of 555010/5/13 at 7:13pmRight now, the problem is I need to raise the volume a lot higher compared my other item to get the same detail out of the music. You guys are right that I probably prefer the analytical sound since I'm used to it. The w4r sounds muddy in comparison since I can't pick out as much detail. I'll give it a few days. Besides that, I do appreciate the other subtle differences in sound. This "upgrade" is probably one that is stretching the limits of my hearing and suffering from big diminishing return. The other problem is probably because some of the music file are poorly recorded. These flaws are being revealed, ie tracks that are excessively sibilant or sound one dimensional no matter what iem I use.

Just do as I suggested. I use the all black star tips and get plenty of detail out of my W4r. But compared to the bright GR07 of course you're going to think otherwise. Spend a week with them on flat EQ without touching your other IEMs. Then go back to the GR07 and tell me which you prefer...

And what about changing the original cables of the W4R ? I've read that some people have a lot of benefits with new cables (optical, 5N OCC Silver Plated...).
Does that really improve the sound quality of my earphones ? And where can I buy it ?
Thank'spost #4777 of 555010/6/13 at 11:38amQuote:
I use the BTG-Audio Sunrise cable that I got from another Head-Fi'er. My cable is 100% copper (vs silver plated or pure silver), and it made marginal improvements (noticeable) in the low end and to overall clarity of sound. Mooses9 has experience with cables and pointed people to eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/5N-OCC-Silver-Plated-Westone-4R-W4R-Upgrade-Cable-/321208328761?pt=US_MP3_Player_Cables_Adapters&hash=item4ac9822239
Any type of silver cable is going to add to the treble.post #4778 of 555010/6/13 at 1:12pm
yeah i found both the btg_audio sunrise cable is good, also that ebay listing cable is also good.
silver plated copper will yeild some of the benifits of the silver.
pure silver is the best that you can get and imo gives most improvement over sound.post #4779 of 555010/6/13 at 3:25pmpost #4780 of 555010/6/13 at 4:14pmQuote:
i too like the black...if you prefer black, you can go for the westone/jh whiplash eclipse v2 twag cable, i have it and like it, its pure silver in translucent black sleeve..but will set you back $285.00post #4781 of 555010/6/13 at 6:23pmQuote:Originally Posted by spook76
And a great way to test your seal on your ear tip is to download the Sensaphonics test. http://www.sensaphonics.com/?page_id=833
I tried that test, the higher pitched tone is always louder than the bass tone on all 3 IEM that I have. The foam tips make the bass tone slightly louder but not match the higher pitched one.

I use this pure silver cable: http://hplaudio.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=182
I bought my W4's and the head-fier I bought them from sent it along with because it was damaged. I repaired pretty cheap and it sounds better than the stock IMO. The highs extend a bit further and everything sounds a bit more clear. I really like what this cable does to the W4, and I'm glad I didn't have to pay retail price for it too! haha
Sorry for the picture re-post, it was relevant to this conversation.
Edited by PETEREK - 10/6/13 at 6:46pmpost #4783 of 555010/6/13 at 8:35pmI have had some good listening time, probably logged about 12 hours since I picked up my package yesterday. I have listened to everything from instrumental jazz, vocal jazz, rock, metal, and blues.I have listened to many qualities of files ranging from flac,320 KB and down. I have tried all of included tips,as well as some comply and shure olives. I have used my PC,galaxy s3 and sansa clip zip. I have not used my UM3X during this time. The w4r's sound great. I am hearing clarity and details with detailed highs and controlled bass. I have found the red or orange star tips give me the best all around listening experience. I think it goes without saying the quality of the file as well as the genre of music have alot to do with good soundstage and seperation. If the music you are listening to is muddled no iem will change that. Put on some Sade, remastered Beatles or Spyro Gyra and listen to the details. The sound is balanced clear and great. Put on some Iron Maiden,Audioslave, or Soundgarden and while it sounds good I think my UM3X,s reproduce this genre better, slower, less muddled parts sound incredible but when the chorus kicks the UM3X does a better job. I totally get it when people say these iem,s benefit from an amp. I do not have an amp but I find myself longing for more punch, not to say I can't drive them but it is as if they want the power. I am giving my brain time to adjust but am totally liking what I hear thus far. I feel fortunate to have picked these up at 299.00.post #4784 of 555010/6/13 at 11:10pmQuote:Originally Posted by spook76
Good news about ear tips for the 4r. The nozzle is 2.5mm so you can try Shure, UE, Comply and EarPortz to name four they all use 2.5mm. I have tried them all (Shure, EarPortz, all the Complys and the UE) and for my SE846 the Westone Star Tips are the absolute best hands down.
how do u compare the sound of shure 846 to W4r's? I mean I always wanted that comparison :/post #4785 of 555010/7/13 at 6:05amQuote:Originally Posted by subguy812

it is a weird iem in that respect. they ARENT hard to drive. there not a sensitive as the se535, but they arent a hard to drive IEM, but they do seem to long for a amplifier, even if you can use them straight out of a phone or dap, they just seem to want a amplifier.....i dont ask questions i just give it what it wants lol.
the w4r are excellent with every amp i have tried, the different amps obviously give different sound signatures but overall they respond very well too amplification.Return HomeBack to Forum: Portable Headphones, Earphones and In-Ear Monitors
