Thx for that. I was wondering how much improvement if I were to hook up a portable amp for the W4s (or for any IEM for that matter). Is it worth it as my amp would be an extremely budget one! Thx in advance.

Much, very high improvement indeed! But cannot elaborate more abot it. I dont have my Mustang amp. rightnow! Still waiting for! Post reviews/comments at this time later... in the amps threads!!

Sure you'l  find answers here, but, it will be more effective if you make your own personal search, in the right channel!

Personally, I think the change is subtle. I think it can be most described as you get more moments when you think "Wow! The W4 is great!" when you are listening to it amped than without. It's not that you don't have those moments unamped...I just find I get more of them amped. I think JDSLabs C5 is a nice amp with it. Not cheaper but way more affordable than many!

Hmmm.... I fact both the mustang and c5 are out of my budget if I were to get an amp. I believe they would definitely improve but I think with the cash I have now, I wouldn't exactly buy me a worth it upgrade. It's alright I think I will let my ears be the judge after I have selected the IEM I want. Currently the 4s are 1st in ranking but that may change.

Thx for that too. Seems like the W4s are indeed in the high end league of universal IEMs with the likes of the 535, ue900, sm64, etc. (excluding the ultra high ends ie800 and k3003 and 334 of course)

Will be heading down to the shop tmr and will make my purchase by the end of this week at a local headphone festival! Can't wait. This is my first "audiophile" purchase. (Along with another upper-mid tier headphone)

Have tried a few IEMs but W4 does it for me
Want to get WR but waiting on my current pair to kick the bucket:)

If the main reason to get wr's is for the detatchable cable then you can always send your current pair into btg-audio to have the mod done to it.  Could work out cheaper for you in the long run.

All this talk of being able to demo iems in shops makes me envious.  In the shops in the uk we are stuck with the likes of lower sennheiser a couple of sony's and er that's it.  Any of the higher end stuff we have to order online so it's pretty much a guess.

So,

I posted a page or so back I was going to buy some W4R, (which I did) only when I received them they did not sound the same as the standard pair I have on loan. By all means they were very close but after a few hours A/Bing them (on/off) I could clearly hear the W4R I had sounded a touch darker. This was not some act of placebo, nore was I going crazy, the W4R I received sounded darker mostly around the mid range, required slightly more volume and felt like it was holding back in detail extension. I have some thoughts on why this is, but I will not post them here. No there was nothing wrong with them, they were in perfect condition. I doubt very much unless you had both like I did at the same time whether some would pick up on this difference, if at all. So much so, I decided to buy the W4 loaner pair and move the W4R onwards.

By all means, now I wait for people to tell me there is no difference, they sound the same. I would like to think I have enough knowledge to determine that these two pairs did not. in one way I'm disappointed because I would of much rather W4R purchasing a pure silver cable for them, I had planned on keeping them for a long time. Then in other ways I'm much happier my standard W4 sound the way they do and unlike the W4R I had. I am not saying this will be the case for everyone, merely my experience between two pairs.

Makes me question quality control from IEM companies. This isn't the first time I've heard difference between two of the same IEM. I had a similar experience with two pairs of Brainwavs B2, another member I know said they heard a difference between two 4Ai and not just a slight difference for that particular case.

Anyway, I really enjoy my W4 especially with Colorfly C3 which I cannot recommend enough for W4 owners who want to step up from their iDevices.

Yes, can't wait of course! Bring some pict from the festival ... and of your new IEM to!  Sometime I hear some audiophile says that they prefer Universal over Custom. For many raisons. (Fits issues, pain, $$$, )

In the price range, W4 is hard to beat! He have so much more inside  to offert, especialy if you add an amp later!

Important things after your purchase, is to find the right tips for you! Experiment is the goal to reach the nirvana! You'l have lots of fun searching among all the tips available,(lots of thread here about it)

Are you go for the "R" version or not? So your be called an Audiophile soon then!   biggrin.gif

I also think it is very subtle.  I use a 7th gen classic with a CLAS and RSA 71-A for my headphones (HD600's), and have used it with the W4's, but I more frequently just use the W4's with just a Classic 5.5.  It's more convenient and the sq is only marginally different.  Amps do make a huge difference with higher impedance full size headphones.

@fiascogarcia

Okay den, that is good news for me as I dun really intend of getting an amp anyway, thx for the info.

@ Skullbox

Haha! I actually started thinking about CIEMS at this price range. In fact, I can get a UM Marvel for cheaper and the Aero for the same price. If I were to push it, I could even get the Mage (for like say an extra 100). Will see to that. Hmm... Pics, sounds like a good idea, will do! I think only the R version is available here and thanks for all the useful tips. (No pun intended)

If you seriously thinking about CIEM, you can look around the JH5pro!  (in the price range of W4r)  Am thinking seriously buying JH5 now, or waiting 6-8 months, to get JH13!!

Take a look at this stunning reviews/posts!     http://www.headfonia.com/triple-jh-comparison-five-ten-and-sixteen/3/
