Each set of tips (that fit my ears anyway) seem to tune the W4 a little differently. For example, what I would call the long large red tips gives the W4 a larger sound stage and more bass. The X-large longer tips gives it more bass and make the earphone sound three-D like. the tips with no color on them cuts the bass down some and makes the sound more balanced, but gives your even more clarity and transparency. And it really makes vocals shine. It also cuts down on instrument separation a bit. All the various sounds are fantastic to my ears and will make it hard to go back to the origina Westone tips (except for the large bullet-shaped silicone ones).
post #3843 of 40912/12/13 at 7:37pmWhile some have had success with silicone bi-and tr-flange mods, generally speaking, previous versions of silicone tips cut the bass down and were a bit siliblant prone. The "star" tips definitely cut the siblance down to almost nothing and the bass seems unaffected or basically equal to that of a foam comply tip which is as strong as you can achieve.
The vocals are just insane with these W4's (GR10 a close 2nd). Even better than I recall than when I owned JH13 and JH16. Diana Krall, Patricia Barber, Joni Mitchell....just crazy good!
Edited by Spyro - 2/12/13 at 7:58pmpost #3844 of 40912/12/13 at 8:00pmI just swapped out he Comply tips for the red tip silicone and WOW!!!!!
Listening to Hotel California Lossless and the difference is huge, what a difference. The Comply was absorbing the bass and some of the mids. Now these W4R really sound great

My W4 is on hiatus until I can get these tips. I've messaged Westone and received a generic, "you can order them soon" response. They said that last year!

I think they meant "soon,tm" tbh.
Anyway how would the w4's cope with stuff like progressive rock out of a sansa clip plus? Having the devils own time getting customs sorted so may get a pair of these to tide me over.
I'm on about bands like Magnum, Marillion, Pendragon, Dream Theatre etc
Cheers
post #3848 of 40912/13/13 at 12:53amI'd like to ask for advice on what to do if you were in my situation.
I have a spoilt pair of westone 4 that has no sound coming out of the left bud and is out of warranty.
I have the option to trade in for a westone 4r to receive a 15% off the retail price from my local supplier.
I also read that some people go for reshelling but it's not guaranteed to revive the earphones.

What would you do?Not many reshell to fix, heck not many would reshell these period. I've always wanted to try and do so when the cable goes out (not that I'm hoping), since I would love to see how the sound would change/improve. Not to mention the fit.
Anyways, I would play it safe and trade them in, or go to someone like BTG Audio and see if they could fix it.
post #3850 of 40912/13/13 at 5:45amQuote:Ipod Classic + Ibasso T3 analog amp. The amp definitely gives it more juice as the W4 is least efficient IEM in Westone line-up. I think the amp also brings out a bit more clarity to fight through the slight veil perceived by so many.

Quote:Speaking of the note 2, my friend owns one and he insists he can hear background static with his shures but when i tried them with my W4, I couldn't hear anything. Since i know his hearing is a lot better than mine i'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Do you hear any static with the W4 on the note 2?
post #3853 of 40912/16/13 at 7:50amHi, i am now decided to get the W4R, just wanna ask if Sansa Clip+ enough to justify Westone 4R? I currenty have iphone 5, but im not sure if it will sound better. I only have a budget of less than 100$ since I will get w4r at the same time. Thanks.
