I guess Westone figured it's much better to have a slightly warm IEM line up over something cold, because please a lot more of the market. I think if W3 where just a little more transparent, just a touch cooler they would be near perfect for my tone levels. Using silver plated interconnect has helped a lot over copper. But when I heard W3 after coming from crisper IEM's like Rockit - R-50 or T-Peos H-100 the veil was very noticeable yet underneath all the detial is there intact. Imagine how your W4's would sound without the veil. cool.gif
I managed to get rid of the veil by pairing the W4 with a silver dragon cable. I would say it makes the IEM improve in clarity and it sounds brighter now. Lows remain the same or ever so slightly tighter bass. However, the end result is a single word, fatigue. I understand why the veil is there now. Without the veil, listening to it will result in slight fatigue after an hour. Especially when your ears are tired, you will definitely wish the veil to be there. It just sounds smoother.

That was exactly what I wanted to do, but having non removable cables on my W3 isn't an option. I can hear that's what W3 wanted. I would change the cable out for probably silver plated meeting the veil half way. I have one option of going for a pure silver interconnect which I'm interested in trying soon, Then again after adjusting I'm rather content with the sound now. W3 warmth reminds me a 'little bit' like listening to a Hifiman DAP, you hear all the detail still, it's a flavour within itself really.

Anyone used Cambridge Audio Dacmagic plus, Audiolab M-dac or benchmark 1 usb (or similar products) with W4s? I want to invest in a high end dac/amp but don't know what to get.

Hi aras, I have the Audiolab M-DAC and it is a nicely detailed DAC with lots of sound stage and the class A headphone output is pretty good (on par with the Lehman Audio BCL I had), but feels it lacks a bit of bass with the W4 so I think there are probably better combinations out there. I'm going to be looking at the Apex Glacier with integrated DAC to drive my HE-500s and W4 soon.

It can mess with your mind a bit.  Generally, brighter IEM's seem to have more extended treble but not sure that is the case with W4.  I think the extension is there, it's just softer.  Upon first listen one could think W3 treble is more extended but not sure if that is the case.  Can anyone measure this out of curiosity?

Thanks for the input! I'm still looking for a good amp/dac for W4s. Dacmini seems to work well with W4 according to couple of owners. What is special about the Apex Glacier?

It's the main reason I haven't sold the W4 in almost 2 years now.

The PFE232 went out the door quicker than almost any headphone I've owned. A close second would be the SM3.

You know - I sent my W4 back last May and got the 232 instead (which I do love for what it is) but I have missed the W4 ever since and I think this is why. I never really wanted to take the W4 out but I do need breaks from the 232. Maybe it's finally time to part ways and get the 4 back. I'll have to think about this.

Before buying expensive cables to replace the already good stock cable, I'd blind test it if possible. After reading the sound science forum one gets to be a little skeptic on the effect of those. smily_headphones1.gif

Would you say the W4 is more transparent than most other universals?  I was playing a track today where I has hearing some distortion in the right channel within a few frequencies.   Not constant but just a few exerpts.  I switched to my JH5 which I think is decent transparancy wise but I am not hearing the distortion but I am not ready to say there is a problem with the W4.  Anybody else come across this?  Is there a program I could run to test it?

After checking a bit it seems I WAS abale to duplicate the distortion/static on the other IEM so it is apparently the recording.  Whew...

Either way, the W4 is pretty darn transparent and exposes flaws on recordings.

I reckon the W4 is pretty transparent, but perhaps it is something else? I was quite shocked to hear how badly the Samsung Galaxy S2 sounded after I tried the W4s with the Galaxy S1! While the Yamaha EPH-100 is otherwise an excellent IEM this difference in quality between the two Samsung phones definitely wasn't as noticeable, but with the W4 it was brickbat in your face obvious!

With the W4 is also easy to pick up artifacts in compressed audio, which can be kind of annoying when it happens to be music purchased from Itunes etc. With one of my favourite classical tracks the W4 makes it real obvious that there are a couple of chairs shuffling at the start of the performance etc. but I later found this was also very present in my HE-500s, but there it doesn't draw too much attention to itself and it is easy to ignore or miss. So the W4 can be described as having some sort of a magnifying effect in my view, but it is difficult to say whether this effect directly relates to transparency.

Aras, the Apex Glacier is a portable DAC/AMP which can drive the Hifiman HE-500 pretty well as from what I have read so far it seems to be a pretty powerful and lively combination which would be great with the W4. I do most of my listening through a Macbook Air and the portable Apex Glacier would definitely complement the notebook setup. Still very tempted to get a nice tube amp to pair with the Audiolab M-DAC! Good luck with your search!

So I received some of the new Westone silicone tips for W4 (and other Westone earphones), and wow! It's amazing what a difference a tip can make. These are surely the best tips I've used on the W4. It enhances the clarity of the music; add more weight to the instruments; and still provides magnificent instrument separation. I need more listening time, but initial impressions. Now I'm really curious about the company's new foam tips. Oh, these deepen the bass too. More thoughts later. Acoustic guitars really shine with these tips.

ericp10 are these the new Star silicon tips? How do I order them?

DO play around with them.  I started with the ones with no color designation which are just like a medium shure olive.  Thought that was the best but I switched to the red-designated tip in right ear and no color designated tip in the left ear.  My ears are slightly different size (as probably many people's is) and this idea of 2 slightly different sized tips is now providing perfect balance and seal in both channels.

Tips are only supplied with most new W4's, not yet available as an accessory.  Westone a month or so late on that.

Thanks for the tip (no pun intended) Spyro.
